Science is digging deeper into the Horror Entertainment Genre not only to find the appeal for many, but it also answered the question of what is "The Scariest Movies of all Time."

Scare Chart
Scare ChartWhat is the scariest movie of all time? Well, as it turns out, there’s a science to determining this.

Broadband Choices – a comparison tool for broadband deals—could have an answer to that question. Broadband Choices did a study that it’s calling the “Science of Scare Project.” For this study, 50 participants of the test audience consumed over 120 hours of the best horror movies, each fitted with a heart rate monitor to measure which movies got their blood pumping the most to find the ultimate horror movie and crown the king of fright night.

For this study, each participant of the test audience was fitted with a heart rate monitor to see how much, on average, their heart rates rose above their resting heart rates during a film. All data were averaged for each film, and one film came out on top as the undeniably scariest movie of the bunch!

The results of the study? According to the heart rates of participants, no movie scared people more than Sinister, a 2012 horror/thriller that stars Ethan Hawke as a true-crime writer who investigates a string of grisly family murders. The average resting heart rate of the participants was 65 BPM (beats per minute). But during Sinister, that average heart rate rose to 86 BPM—a 32% increase. That was the highest rise in the BPM of any movie watched by the study participants. However, the biggest jump scare belonged to Insidious, which owned a moment that sent the participants’ heart rate up to 133 BPM. Overall, that movie came in second place to Sinister.

Maybe you’re a horror movie lover that continually seeks the next big scare; maybe you’re a casual viewer that watches terrifying films only around Halloween time. Whichever side of the spectrum you may fall on, you can now add the movie that has been officially deemed the scariest film ever, according to science, to your queue.
