‘The Vampire Diaries’ Similarities To ‘True Blood’

"The Vampire Diaries" and "True Blood"

Similarities Review Between "True Blood" & "The Vampire Diaries"

HBO’s “True Blood” and The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” the subject matter may differ. Yet, both have very similar plots involving their three main characters.

True Blood

“True Blood”

Sookie, played by Academy Award winner Anna Paquin plays a normal yet telepathic waitress. She ends up falling in love with two vampires. In The Vampire Diaries, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is a teenage girl who is torn between two male vampires. Coincidence?

One of the other elements that make these two shows very similar is the towns they live in and how they are similar. In CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” Mystic Falls’ town has horrors beneath it that eventually becomes one of the main things that the characters fight off in each episode. In “True Blood,” the city that Sookie resides in Louisiana also has evils lurking around the city, ones that she must again fight off during almost every episode.

Next, another element that makes these two series very similar is the “good vampire”/”bad vampire” theme in both series. Potential love interests for the main heroine deal with the more sensitive vampires. They seem to be more loyal and friendly to those around them. Then, the two bad boy vampires have off- and on-again relationships with the series’s main female character. The evil vampires also are always in the mood for “danger,” but at the end of the day, despite their bad boy persona, they both have a heart of gold and are very loyal.

The last element that makes these shows very similar is that both of the main female heroines seem normal, but they secretly have magical powers. In True Blood, seemingly a normal waitress, Sookie is actually a fairy. The vampire brothers are drawn because fairy blood is the magic potion or elixir vampires. Still, they end up both falling in love with her instead, even though she has the purest, sweet blood that they can drink. In the Vampire Diaries, Elena, a normal teenage girl, is a doppelgänger. Having special blood and can only be drunk by other magical beings, like the two Salvatore brothers, who both love her despite her blood being super precious to vampires like themselves.

Based on these examples, we can see that HBO’s “True Blood” and The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries” are very similar based on character interactions. The love triangle element, two sets of vampires with similar personalities. One is purer, and one being more rebellious. The two female protagonists’ secret powers and how robust their blood is to their love interests don’t matter to the men in their lives. The guys just love the girls for who they are. These are the reasons why True Blood and The Vampire Diaries have almost the same plot.
