It’s all good at this point, right? Now, imagine… What if this community was suddenly gone, or worse, had all of their work trademarked by an irresponsible individual?

Although the SCP Foundation contains a lot of interesting stories, they fall under a creative commons license. Basically, you can just create and sell the art, video games, or movies that you created based on the content in SCP Foundation. And, you can do this without the need to pay for the licensing fees. But, of course, you’re required to give credit where credit is due, like the Author of the Entries, and add the “Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 License” to your works. This basically means that others are also able to refer to your works, as well. Although there’s a flaw here and there in this system, it has been working well for SCP Foundation since 2008.

But, recently, there is an individual in Russia who has successfully extorted and threatened legitimate sellers of SCP merchandise within that particular country, and he even took down the official social media page of SCP Foundation in Russian branch. Now, he is making moves on the Russian official SCP foundation wiki itself, demanding that the SCP Foundation hand over the SCP’s wiki website, so he can sell his own merchandise. 

You might find yourself thinking at this point, “Wow, to take down such a huge organization, he must be a very influential person, or he must have an underground organization backing him up!” But, it appears that he is just a normal individual, who knows the loopholes in Russian law very well.

You might also think, “It’s only happened in Russia so far, and it won’t concern those of us in the rest of the world, right?” Now, imagine what if this individual in Russia won? Wouldn’t it make sense that he would continue to deepen his claws? Maybe, let’s pretend that the individual is satisfied with just taking the Russian branch into his own hands. Wouldn’t it make sense that others would then turn their eyes on the SCP Foundation, too, since there is such a loophole in place? 

In order to take back the ownership of the social media page, and make it online like it used to be, the SCP Foundation representative has reached out to the social media company, VK. Unfortunately, it didn’t come to fruition as expected. VK will abide by the individual in Russia, as long as the trademark registration stands. 

In May 2020, the SCP Foundation received many generous offers from its fans to help with the legal funding via donations. At that time, the SCP Foundation wanted to resolve this issue with diplomacy, so it wouldn’t have to turn into some huge drama.

But, with the current developments, it is now no longer possible to resolve this issue without a legal battle, which is not the ideal way to proceed. But, things are getting out of hand, to the point where there may be no other practical path.

This is the part where you come in! 

Although they already reached their goal in the Go Fund Me campaign for the legal fees, and I totally understand that not everyone is able to show their support with money, I do urge people to check out the SCP Wiki for the interesting entry.

Conclusion

I think some, or most of the critics will agree with me that we are kind of lacking a new idea in the horror genre scene, overall. People around me are often expressing the sentiment, “Ugh… not another zombie movie again…” 

I believe that with the Creative-Commons License 3.0 that was implemented on the SCP Foundation, we will be able to see more fresh horror ideas out there in the future, and that the idea of “Forward Sharing” could evolve everything to the next level, too.

I am looking forward to seeing media and entertainment creators (especially film makers) being able to manifest these ideas in the SCP Foundation in the near future!
