The Scary Side of TikTok

The social media platform TikTok isn’t all fun and games like you think it is.

TikTok is a social media platform where users create and share short videos. It pulls in over 689 million monthly active users worldwide, making it the seventh largest social media platform. The content on TikTok ranges from cooking tutorials to hilarious comedy skits, and everything between. However, things take a scary turn when we dive deeper into the platform…

Horror is becoming more and more relevant on social media as of late. We see numerous people sharing or retelling some of the most chilling stories, like Bailey Sarian and her Mystery and Murder series or AshleysFreakFriday and her paranormal stories – both of which can be found on YouTube. But, let’s not exclude TikTok from the fun.

User @ariacyrus is an online personality who fits into this category but takes a slightly different approach. She shares videos on scary games, curses, and conspiracy theories that will be sure to spook you out on TikTok.

One of my favorite videos Aria has shared is “The Picture Game”. The Picture Game is a game where two people sit in a dark room to capture a picture of a ghost. She explains that two people must sit across one another, at midnight, then chant “The door is open, please come in,” six times. You are to say this together. Then, you take a picture of each other, and whoever the ghost is behind is “chosen.” This person will start to feel cold and must leave the room immediately, before things get worse.

Commentators like Aria, Ashley, and Bailey are all great when it comes to storytime on TikTok. They carefully provide great detail on horror stories that make you feel like you were there. But, if you want to be even more submersed into the story, augmented reality games might be the right source of scariness you are looking for.

Augmented reality games (ARGs) are interactive experiences where a story is being told. This could be any type of genre, but let’s stick to horror. The most unique feature is the ability to interact with the characters that help develop the story and move it forward. The purpose of these games are to make you question the reality of it: What is going on? Is this really happening? These games are becoming increasingly advanced thanks to social media, where users obsess over any clue they think they have and can theorize amongst themselves. And yes, ARGs can be found on TikTok.

@the_exits_are_missing is a popular account on TikTok in the form of an ARG. In December of 2020, the user posted a video of them picking up Christmas decorations from a storage unit. They say they were there for four hours, when they noticed all of the doors and elevators were missing.

From here, the journey continues as the user finds themselves wandering in this new reality, searching for an escape. Without spoiling too much, the story progresses with much terror. Luckily, the videos are still available on TikTok for others to get a thrill out of this experience.

ARGs are beginning to change the way we receive our horror fix for some of the best reasons. People are now able to interact with the stories on a new level, commenting their thoughts and sharing with their friends in real time. While @the_exits_are_missing is just one example on TikTok, many are out there and will come about in the future.

As TikTok continues to grow in number, we start to see more examples of horror on social media. We see users sharing stories, games, and other spooky experiences like augmented reality games. Today’s fans of horror are in for more modern experiences and get to enjoy it all from their mobile devices.
