Eyes Without A Face, A Review

eyes without a face

A film that will cut through your mind and FACE!

French director Georges Franju features his unusual, but remarkably engaging and creative talents in the 1960 horror film, Eyes Without A Face

Eyes Without A Face, is about a surgeon who leaves his daughter’s face disfigured after an experiment goes terribly wrong, so he goes to great lengths to try to find his daughter a new face.  He does so, however, by kidnapping young women and attempting face transplants. All of his transplants all become unsuccessful. Then the surgeon’s mind begins to go insane when his daughter realizes just what he has been doing to find her a new face.

Eyes Without A Face completed filming in 1959, and premiered in Paris on March 2, 1960. Although it passed through the censors, the film caused too much controversy. During the film’s showing at the 1960 Edinburgh Film Festival, seven audience members fainted.

The Eyes Without A Face film’s inspirations for other entertainments

American film director John Carpenter said that the film inspired the idea of the mask for the Michael Myers character in the horror film series Halloween. Carpenter once said that the film crew “didn’t have any money to make a mask. It was originally written the way you see it, in other words, it’s a pale mask with human features, almost featureless. I don’t know why I wrote that down, why Debra and I decided on that, maybe it was because of an old movie called Eyes Without A Face.

The movie didn’t only inspire another movie slasher killer, but also a song. In the same title, Billy Idol was inspired by the film and released the song Eyes Without A Face in 1983. In an interview, Idol said “I’ve always had a fascination with the titles of horror films … I was particularly intrigued by the ‘60s French nouvelle vague forerunner Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without A Face), about a brilliant plastic surgeon who vows to restore the face of his daughter, who has been horribly disfigured in a car accident. This vow leads him to murder, as he sets out collecting the facial features of his victims, which he then grafts onto his daughter’s hideous countenance, attempting to restore her beauty. Her staring eyes remain the only thing visible.”

My Opinion on Eyes Without A Face

I watched the movie for the first time a couple of years ago, and I thought it was just another boring cliche black and white, foreign film, but was I mistaken? It was a movie I never regretted watching. The story was intriguing and it was made ahead of its time. The idea of cutting off women’s faces was something that I found was something very imaginative. It is my all time favorite horror film.
