Marvel Comics Introduces Dr. Michael Morbius
It’s no surprise that Marvel has been on a roll this past year. Even with all the new projects they’ve released in theaters and on streaming platforms in 2021, fans still have a lot to look forward to in 2022. The newest addition to the family will include Morbius, a horror-fantasy film directed by Daniel Espinosa, based on the original Marvel Comics character Dr. Michael Morbius.
About The Film
The film portrays Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), a biochemist, as he attempts to rid himself of a rare blood disease. His scientific experimentations on bats helped Morbius cure himself, but it also caused him to contract a form of vampirism. Because of this, he gained special, superhero-like abilities including enhanced senses, a hatred for light, and a taste for blood. Now, the line between heroes and villains is blurred as Morbius tries to battle with his new villainous urges.
The Cast of Morbius
Morbius features numerous other characters alongside Dr. Michael Morbius. Simon Stroud and Alberto Rodriguez, played by Tyrese Gibson and Al Madrigal, are two FBI agents that are hunting Morbius.
The film will also include Emil Nikols, a professor and Morbius’ childhood friend, played by Jared Harris. Adria Arjona will be portraying Martine Bancroft, a scientist and Morbius’ fiancée. Loxias Crown, Morbius’ friend who suffers from the same rare blood disease, will be represented by Matt Smith.
Additionally, Michael Keaton will be making a return as Adrian Toomes, aka the Vulture, after appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).
Released in Theaters and on Streaming Platforms
Morbius, originally planned to be released in July of 2020, was constantly pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is confirmed that the film will be shown in theaters throughout the United States starting January 28th, 2022.
Although Sony has signed deals with streaming platforms, like Disney Plus, Hulu, and Netflix, there is no exact date to determine when Morbius will be available for fans to stream from the comfort of their own home.
The Future of Dr. Michael Morbius
The introduction of the multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has opened the door for many possibilities for both current and future Marvel characters.
Tom Holland, MCU’s Spider-Man, shared interest in his version of Spider-Man and Morbius meeting and battling against each other. Jared Leto also expressed his thoughts on Morbius interacting with Blade and other characters in the future, sharing that there is a lot of potential for future crossovers.
While the exact future of Morbius in the cinematic universe is unknown, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, expressed interest in Morbius appearing alongside Blade in a potential future film.
