Summer Horror Films Coming in 2022

The Most Anticipated Horrors Coming This Summer!

By Ian Ward

If there is one genre of films that has set the standard for the summer blockbuster, it is horror. Jaws practically invented the concept of the summer blockbuster in 1975, and films like Friday the 13th and Midsommar are horror classics released during peak blockbuster season. This year will be a competitive race to see which horror film will be a summertime classic. Here are some films looking to scare viewers.

A reboot of the 1984 film of the same name, Firestarter stars Zac Effron as a father looking to protect his daughter from a secret government agency after they learn the girl has developed pyrokinesis. Besides being a reboot, Firestarter is also based on a book by Steven King. Given the number of great horror films based on his novels, Firestarter will be off to a hot start this summer. The film will be released in theaters and on Peacock on May 13.

Directed by Alex Garland, Men follows a young woman named Harper who goes on vacation after the death of her husband. Once on vacation, she begins to realize that she is being stalked by a mysterious person. Distributed by A24, Men has a lot going for it, considering it stars Jessie Buckley in the lead role. Garland wrote 28 Days Later in addition to directing Ex Machina and Annihilation. The film is set to release on May 20.

Originally premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan 22, 2022, Watcher looks at an American woman named Julia (Maika Monroe) who travels to Bucharest with her boyfriend, Francis, for his work. While in Romania, Julia fears a local serial killer and starts to worry that she is always being watched. What makes Watcher interesting is that horror streaming service Shudder co-acquired the distribution rights along with IFC Midnight. What also stands out about Watcher is that it is the directorial debut for Chloe Okuno who previously co-directed V/H/S/94 in 2019. As for Monroe, she starred in the hit 2014 film It Follows, along with previously being in Independence Day: Resurgence. The expected release date is June 3.

Probably the biggest horror film of the year, Nope is the latest film by Oscar nominated writer and director Jordan Peele that examines an unknown force that has been causing chaos to both humans and animals. Starring Keke Palmer and Oscar nominated actor Daniel Kaluuya as Jill and James Haywood, Nope looks to continue the hot streak Peele has had at the box office and critics after his previous films Get Out and Us were both received phenomenally. The film also features Stevem Yeun and Barbie Ferreira in supporting roles with music being composed by Michael Ables, who also composed Get Out and Us. Nope is set to be released in theaters on July 22.

Featuring T.I and Joseph Sikora, Fear focuses on a getaway gone wrong after an contagious airborne threat ruins the celebration. Co-written and directed by Deon Taylor, Fear was shot over the course of seventeen days during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The film will be distributed by Hidden Empire Film Group, a studio which was founded by Taylor and is set to be released on Aug 26.
