The late Anne Rice is known for her prolific work as a writer. She is said to have written over 150 million books, with Interview with the Vampire being one of the most renowned and the first. However, it was not initially popular but that later changed.
In 1994, Interview with the Vampire was transformed into a motion picture. This film was a delight to fans of the genre and Rice’s work. And for good measure, the film became one of the most memorable vampire accounts to date aside from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, published in 1897 and re-envisioned in 1992.
There are not many fans of the vampire genre who are not familiar with the account of Lestat and the work maintains its mark given its rating of 7.5 on IMDB and 65% on rotten tomatoes. Both are indicators of the film’s strength and success. Additionally, the film helped launch the careers of two very successful A-listers, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.
Some like their masterpieces perfectly preserved. However, when one’s story is transformed, and it is close to perfection, there is a significant risk that comes with re-imagining the work. The new vision could very well muddy the waters and leave a blemish. For many, hearing that AMC is reviving Rice’s classic is not the best news.
Nevertheless, it is a joy to see that Rice’s work and influence live on for others. There is much applause for those who would take on such a lofty project.
This project is believed to be far from the exploitation of the series. The inception of this project is believed to be more so an act of love for Rice’s work and what she was able to do with the Vampire genre. As a source aptly notes,
“The goal of the AMC adaptation isn’t just to preserve The Vampire Chronicles but to reignite a passion for Rice’s work. We hope this series compels the Anne Rice fan to rediscover her works.”
Without a doubt, this is a shared hope.
No premiere date has been released yet and the plot remains under wraps. According to a source, although there will be a great deal of effort to preserve the original work, there will be some changes. As noted,
“Developing this series carries great pressure and responsibility. It is imperative that we do not disappoint her fans, and yet we need to make sure that this story, these characters sing for a modern audience.”
But do not fret too much. Some reworks have been brilliant, and there is the great promise this series will be no different.
The Interview with the Vampire series will stream on AMC this year. IMDB has already provided the slot for its eight-episode run. Sam Reid of Belle reprises the role of Lestat. Jacob Anderson of Game of Thrones will portray Louis.
Anne Rice is no longer with us, as her labor on earth is done. However, the beauty of her artistry lives on, and her influence on horror is irreplicable. So it is with the hope that with the upcoming AMC Interview with the Vampire series AMC will realize its goal, and Rice’s work will go on to move a new generation.
