New Information About New Netflix Resident Evil Series

Resident Evil Netflix

The Franchise is Spreading to Netflix

Netflix has officially announced a new Resident Evil television styled series with a trailer released in May. The series will follow a young woman named Jade Wesker, played by Ella Balinska, as she tries to adjust to life in New Raccoon City as the Umbrella Corporation experiments with the dangerous T-virus. Her father is Albert Wesker, a prominent character from the games that’s played by Lance Reddick. Not much else is known but monsters from the popular video game series are shown in the trailer along with the premise.

The story of the upcoming show takes place in two time periods and shows life in New Raccoon City in the year 2022 and leads to the year 2036 in a post-apocalyptic London. The series would flashback between both these time periods and follow the struggles of Jade Wesker. Given the storylines of the games and films released of Resident Evil, a zombie outbreak might play a role.

To build anticipation for the new series, here is an overview of the Resident Evil franchise from the video games to the live action films.

Enter the World of Survival Horror

The Resident Evil series had its tentative beginnings on the original Playstation. The first Resident Evil focuses on two characters, Chris Refield and Jill Valentine as they investigate a bizarre case in a Mansion. Resident Evil’s gameplay was about picking battles with limited ammunition while solving puzzles and managing inventory. Enemies of the game include zombies and horrifying monsters made to be bioweapons by the Umbrella corporation, who play the villains throughout the beginning of the series.

Resident Evil has become so successful that a sequel was released in 1998. Resident Evil 2 took the claustrophobic atmosphere of the first game and expanded into Raccoon City, the fictional midwestern town besieged by a zombie outbreak. Along with new locations and characters like Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, the game brings more varieties of enemies and creatures to face along with memorable puzzles. Resident Evil 3 continues the adventures of the previous protagonist Jill Valentine as she tries to escape Raccoon City while pursued by Nemesis.

Code Veronica was the last of the mainline games to play like pure survival horror, soon after the series started going in a more action focused direction. In 2005 the release of Resident Evil 4 paved the way for other horror games to intermix action and survival horror elements. Inventory management and ammunition conservation was still a major part of Resident Evil. By Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 the series has lost most of its Survival Horror tension and became full blown action with set pieces and creature design to match.

After the mixed reception of Resident Evil 6, Capcom made Resident Evil 7 that returns to its survival horror roots by mitigating the action and returning the tension of navigating a hazardous environment. The success of Resident Evil 7 brought a return to traditional survival horror, convincing Capcom to develop and release remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 that retain the survival horror elements of the classic games. Even with these mainline games, there have been dozens of spin offs that differ in action, gameplay, and atmosphere while expanding on the series.

Adapting the Games to Films and Tv Series

Because of the popularity of Resident Evil, several adaptations to the games were made in Hollywood. In 2002, Paul W. S. Anderson started directing a series of Resident Evil live action films featuring an original storyline in which Umbrella’s T-virus goes out of control and infects most of the world. The main protagonist is an original character named Alice and she’s portrayed by Milla Jovovich.

The films deviate greatly from the games but retain certain elements, from the creatures like Lickers and cerberus dogs, to certain characters from the games having major scenes in the films. The movies were the longest running video game adaptations as well as the most “successful” film adaptation of a video game franchise. Aside from the live action films there were also a series of CGI animated Resident Evil films that focus on the game characters like Leon Kennedy and is set in the game universe.

In 2021 a reboot to the live action films was released, titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The movie was more faithful to the game adaptations, featuring locations from the games, characters and creatures are also a major part in the film. The film attempts to adapt both Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil 2 and takes several story elements from the games.

Netflix also released an animated CGI series called Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness set in the video game series after the events of Resident Evil 4. They are also set to release the new live action series in July. While the trailer shown so far only bares a bit of the premise and showcases aspects of the series including glimpses of some creatures, it’ll be interesting to see how this series adapts the Resident Evil story.
