Hocus Pocus 2 Trailer Released!

Hocus Pocus 2

A Much Different Spell Than the First

Sistaaahs … they’re back, but it’s different this time around. Hocus Pocus 2 will hit Disney+ on September 30, 2022, and fans already started counting down the days until its premiere ever since the first set photos surfaced online in 2021. Now that the official teaser trailer is upon us, viewers are just dying to know what they’re in for with this new ride.

The plot of Hocus Pocus 2 sadly doesn’t bring back the original core three members, Max (Omri Katz), Allison (Vinessa Shaw) and Dani (Thora Birch) — at least from what the trailer and cast information includes for now. It, instead, follows three brand-new young women back in Salem, Massachusetts. After they accidentally resurrect the Sanderson sisters with a spell that lights the black flame candle, the high schoolers must find a way to prevent the child-hungry witches from wreaking havoc on the town once again.

The teaser trailer, which was dropped on June 28, opens with the three teenagers who wish pal Becca a “Happy Birthday.” She then explains her “birthday ritual” as a simple evening consisting of just a “scary movie marathon.”

“Same as every year,” she claims, until the teaser switches to a new clip of the girls appearing to light a candle on the floor of a dark forest backdrop. Next, we see a black cat that looks a whole lot like Binx from the original 1993 flick. However, voice actor Jason Marsden is reportedly not returning to play the helpful, witty kitty.

Later in the trailer, a man informs the teens that “it’s on the 16th birthday that a witch gets her powers.” And now, the fun begins — the audience hears the young witches chant a citation that begins with, “Another year begins anew.” Then, it goes into something totally different from any original Hocus Pocus-esque spells.

“Itch-it-a-cop-it-a-Mel-a-ka-mystica,” is what the teens chant in the trailer, which sounds eerily as if both Halloweentown and The Craft films blended together. However, this is a Disney sequel; it likely won’t contain anything that graphic. But, nonetheless, the sight and sound of this oddly realistic citation is refreshing for fans because we’re gearing up for something that doesn’t look like a cute little spinoff. It rather sounds like a whole new beast.

Aside from the long, strange chant, the girls also say the following as part of their spell: “Maiden, mother, and crone too. We call on thee with one request. Help our intentions manifest.”

Once the black flame candle lights up, the trailer taunts us with the ultimate sequel-oriented lesson — “This Halloween season, some legends never die.” Next, the entire ground splits open with a red strike between two of the teens after casting their spell.

Finally, we hear Winnifred’s (Bette Midler) voice come back to life after nearly two decades of being dead — “Lock up your children! Yes, Salem, we’re back!” But it’s the sight of the three Sandersons (Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) coming out from the shadows that hooks viewers to the edge of their seats.

Of course, what would Hocus Pocus 2 be without a sprinkle of comedy? Fortunately, the trailer teased fans with that through a scene at what appears to be a Halloween party.

“Hey, it’s the Sanderson sisters!” a man says as he sees the resurrected women (although he probably has no clue they’re real). “I bet you’re looking for the stage,” he adds, before Midler responds, “Always.” The clip is seemingly a reference to her iconic musical number toward the end of the 1993 movie when she rocked out to “I Put a Spell on You.”

Well, whatever Hocus Pocus 2 brings us, it already feels like we’ve been put under its spell.
