Scream 6 Announced

Scream 6

What’s Your Favorite Scary Movie?

A sixth installment is coming to the Scream franchise next year. It has been stated that it will be a direct sequel to Scream (2022), set to be directed again by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. It’s written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, who between them have credits on Scream (2022), Ready or Not, and Zodiac. Kevin Williamson is coming back as an executive producer.

Courtney Cox, Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Hayden Panettire are coming back. Samara Weaving, Dermont Mulroney, Henry Czerny, and Tony Revolori have been announced as new characters. Neve Campbell will not be returning.

I am beyond excited for Hayden Panettire to come back as Kirby and am curious how she will fit in. I held out hope for a long time and I was happy to see her cameo in Scream (2022). I am also thrilled to see Samara Weaving and Tony Revolori in the Scream universe. I believe that they will both be able to do well in the movie. I am also curious as to what Gale’s role will be, as the only adult to have dealt with Ghostface for so long.

As far as the Neve Campbell news, I am selfishly heartbroken but understand. She’s been in the role for so long, helped shape the final girl trope, and has given so much as Sidney, but it still could be an interesting plot point. I am also very happy to see the Carpenter sisters and Meeks-Martin twins coming back as well. They are all strong next generation Scream characters.

As far as what I would like to see, I am curious about how Dewey and Sidney’s absence will affect the story, what Kirby has been up to, how the new characters will fit in, Sam’s heritage, and how the returning characters are doing after the events of Scream (2022). I am looking forward to seeing how Kirby will interact with the characters after surviving Ghostface herself. As far as overall meta commentary, I would really enjoy expansion on the Scream 4 and even parts of Scream (2022) with the ideas about modern influencer/social media culture, internet fame, how media is consumed, and virality.

Whatever happens and whatever this movie is about, I am very excited and curious. I thoroughly enjoyed Scream (2022) and Scream is a really special and important franchise that is still going with an interesting world after 25 years. We owe a lot to Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, and it is great that there is still a fandom. Neve Campbell will always be Sidney no matter what. Scream made and continues to make horror history. It is not often when the sequels all make up an interesting world and well thought out, overall plot line. Woodsboro is a very interesting town.

The Scream franchise is very quotable, plain fun, and one of the biggest modern slasher franchises in the past 25 years. Scream breathed new life into the slasher genre, started the trends of meta commentary, and really popularized the who’s the killer guessing games. Scream is unique in the sense that throughout the films, we see how the evolution of technology has changed over time. This is quite literally just due to the technology showcased being modern in each movie at the time, but it is a historic way to track advancements.

Scream 6 has been confirmed for theatrical release on March 31st, 2023, leaving plenty of time to rewatch the entire franchise.
