If You Were Sold by The Title, You're Not The Only One!
In her third directorial outing, actress Elizabeth Banks presents her craziest project yet. Cocaine Bear is a new black-comedy horror film set in a small Georgia town and revolves around, you guessed it, a bear that comes into contact with copious amounts of cocaine. If that sounds wild, imagine how it must have been when this actually happened. Cocaine Bear is based on a true story from the year 1985.
A plane was flying over Georgia when the pilot, Andrew C. Thornton II, a convicted drug smuggler, and former narcotics officer, threw a large duffel bag with 40 containers of cocaine out of the aircraft to lighten its load. This must not have worked, though, as Thornton soon followed. He would not make it safely to the ground as his parachute was faulty. He would die upon impact and thus be never charged. The duffel bag was found three months later in the possession of a 175-pound black bear. All 40 containers had been opened. The real story of the bear that ingested the drugs came with far less bloodshed than what the film’s trailer suggests. The bear never killed anyone and instead died from heavy cocaine consumption. But as Mark Twain once said, “never let the truth get in the way of a good story”.
The film will reimagine the events that took place over three decades ago. It sees an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists, and teenagers banding together to survive the vicious yet goofy onslaught of a 500-pound bear high on cocaine. If the trailer is anything to go off of, it’ll be both crazy and degrees of scary as this apex predator tears its way through the woods and anyone in the way of its next bump. Also seen in the trailer, lots of notable stars will be along for the ride.
Keri Russell (Antlers) will star as a mother searching for her kids. The film will also feature the late Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) in one of his final film roles before passing. Emmy winner Margo Martindale (The Americans) will play a police officer. Game of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju will play a tourist hiker. O’Shea Jackson Jr. will play a drug dealer out to retrieve the cocaine consumed by the bear, and Scott Seis and Kahyun Kim will play paramedics who unwittingly stumble into the bear’s path. The movie will also feature Alden Ehrenreich, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Christian Convery, and Brooklynn Prince.
Produced by Universal Pictures, the film will be released in theaters on February 24, 2023. As said earlier, this will be actress Elizabeth Banks’s third directorial project, which makes sense because only she could come up with something this bonkers. The movie was written by Jimmy Warden and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who also produced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Don’t miss this insane new comedy thriller when it lands in theaters early next year.
