The Mean One

A Nasty Mr. Grinch

He’s the real mean one. A brand-new Grinch was introduced late last year when The Mean One hit theaters on December 9, 2022. While the holiday season has come to an end, many people love to leave their Christmas lights up through January (thanks, Taylor Swift!). So, if you’re looking for a few more frightfully jolly movies to watch at the start of this new year, the horror parody is perfect for a rainy, wintry day.

Like How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ setting of Whoville, The Mean One takes place in Newville and introduces us to Cindy You-Know-Who. The young leading lady witnesses the Grinch look-alike murder her mother. Twenty years later, Cindy and her father return to their hometown, only to see the bloodthirsty monster’s next killing spree. Now, it’s up to her to stop the Mean One from destroying the entire town during Christmastime.

The Mean One’s trailer was released in October 2022, and begins with the film’s opening scene when Cindy meets the beast, who fatally attacks her mother. We see the little girl in pigtails walk down the stairs and see who appears to be Santa Claus. But we, of course, know that it’s certainly not Saint Nick. Next, the trailer cuts to “20 years later,” when Cindy and her dad return to Newville.

“Did you ever find the Christmas killer?” future Cindy asks a town resident in one scene, to which a man tells her they “never got a reliable description” of the green monster.

The trailer — maintaining a holiday-ish font reminiscent of the original Dr. Seuss story — then cuts to telling us, “First he stole Christmas. Now, he’s back for blood.” We even see the pointed mountain where the Mean One lives, which looks identical to where Jim Carrey’s character resided with his dog.

In true heroine style, the teaser flashes to clips of Cindy working out and preparing to fight the murderer, saying, “I’m not gonna be a victim.”

Since this is a satire, though, viewers are left on a cliffhanger who will make it to Christmas Day: The Mean One or warrior Cindy.

The Mean One hasn’t reached a streaming service yet but appears in select theaters.
