Welcome to a Mirrored Execution

Get ready to watch Alexander Skarsgard and Mia Goth pull you on an extremely abstract, chilling ride in Infinity Pool. Directed by Brandon Cronenberg, the horror flick transforms from what we think is just a terrifying vacation into something much more sinister.

The story’s synopsis introduces us to a couple who is “guided by a seductive and mysterious woman (Goth)” as they go on vacation and “venture outside the resort grounds,” only to “find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror.”

“A tragic accident soon leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: either you’ll be executed, or, if you’re rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.”

Based on the storyline alone, it’s clear that Infinity Pool isn’t anything like the typical slasher or supernatural movie. And its trailer, which was released at the beginning of the year, frames the entire story without giving away the shocking twists and turns.

The teaser begins with Skarsgard’s character, James Foster, a writer, and his wife, Em Foster (Cleopatra Coleman) having dinner with the mysterious woman in question played by Goth — Gabi Bauer — in addition to her husband, Alban Bauer (Jalil Lespert). After explaining his writing career to their new friends, it’s obvious that Gabi sees something in James. Later on, James accidentally hits and kills a person while driving.

“Here the punishment for any crime committed is death,” an officer tells James after arresting him. “But, for a significant sum, we’ll build a double to send in for your execution.”

By “double,” the officer literally meant this island of killers gives criminals an option to clone themselves, and to atone for their crimes by executing their cloned self.

Next, we see Gabi tell James that they “need to complete [his] transformation” as they all suddenly start wearing strange masks. Apparently, James goes on a dark journey after witnessing the killing of his cloned self, as the trailer ends with another character asking him, “You know, James, do you worry that they got the wrong man?”

Talk about an eerie way to end a trailer with a bang!

The film focuses on the human psyche, particularly with Skarsgard’s character as he must grapple with how he felt after watching his own execution. The question of whether you should be relieved or utterly disturbed arises throughout the film, as James’ wife enunciates how disgusted she is by the method according to the trailer.

Infinity Pool is in theaters now, and its streaming date is currently unknown. However, some outlets agree that the movie is expected to be released on either Hulu or Prime Video due to past Neon productions being streamed on those platforms.
