Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse – Everything You Need To Know

The Highly Anticipated Sequel is Finally Coming This Summer!

Nearly five years ago, the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dominated box offices around the world, completely redefining superhero movies as a whole. It gained widespread acclaim in all aspects, critics praising everything from the animation to the voice acting from the actors. It even won Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019, and it still remains a fan-favorite for so many people. That being said, there is no doubt that the sequel to the movie is a highly anticipated blockbuster movie that the whole world has been looking forward to for years now. The sequel, like most movies at the time, was supposed to be released in 2022 but unfortunately got pushed to June 2023 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Its theatrical release is certainly going to keep dedicated Spider-Man fans busy at the theaters, but for those who don’t have a clue as to what they’re getting themselves into, here’s a breakdown of what is known about the movie.

Where We Left Our Heroes Last

In the previous movie, teenager Miles Morales, the main Spider-Man protagonist, had to deal with both embracing his new powers and responsibilities as his reality’s new protector along with defeating Kingpin and foiling his plan to resurrect his dead wife and son at the cost of parallel universes collapsing. Needless to say, he was able to get through those struggles with the help of multiple different Spider-Men that had landed in his universe as collateral damage, specifically Peter B. Parker (Miles’ reluctant mentor played by Jake Johnson) and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen (played by Hailee Steinfeld). At the end of the first film, the different Spider-Men were able to go back to their respective universes, and it seemed like it would be the last time viewers would see these characters. Lucky for us, that is not the case.

What Our Heroes Have To Face Next

The premise of the sequel revolves around Miles facing two dilemmas at the same time once again. Gwen Stacy unexpectedly approaches Miles asking for his help to save the universes once again from a villain threatening to wipe everything out, and he agrees to take on the challenge. Traveling through the Spider-Verse together, the spider duo come across the protectors of the Spider-Verse dubbed the Spider-Force. They are a group of Spider-People led by Miguel O’Hara, a variant of Spider-Man played by Oscar Isaac, and other Spider-Man variants include Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman and Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk (played by Issa Rae and Daniel Kaliyah respectively). Miles, however, finds himself at odds with the Spider-Force as to how to deal with the villain of the movie: Johnathon Ohnn, or more commonly known as the Spot (played by Jason Schwartzman). With the ability to travel through different universes due to being covered in interdimensional portals, he threatens to wreak havoc and cause a catastrophic disaster that would wipe out the Spider-Verse. It’s a race against and through time as Miles and the Spider-Force try to defeat the Spot before it’s too late.

It’s safe to say that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is going to be an explosive expansion of the Spider-Verse franchise as we know it, and unlike last time, there’s more to look forward to. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is slated to release on March 29th, 2024, and there is a spin-off film revolving around the Spider-Women of the franchise in development, producer Amy Pascal saying that Across the Spider-Verse would be a “launching pad” for the aforementioned film.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released exclusively in theaters on June 2nd, 2023.
