Midori Francis on Playing Her Character’s Near-Sightedness
On the latest episode of Dead Talk Live, actress Midori Francis joined our television show to discuss her newest film, Unseen, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on March 7th, 2023.
Francis portrays her character, Emily, who gets lost in the woods without her glasses while her ex is hunting her down. But the medical professional has one problem: severe near-sightedness. After she misdials a call, a store clerk answers the phone and must help guide Emily over a video call.
After reading the script, Francis understood that this character would be a true “fighter” and, therefore, looked for similarities between herself and Emily.
“I think I have a lot of energy as a person,” the Grey’s Anatomy alum said. “I’m easily bored. And so I think that my natural disposition and my hunger to do things, I knew would align well with the circumstance.”
Since the plot involves a whole lot of running around outdoors, Francis noted that she likes the thrill of shooting an intense story like this.
“In terms of her character, I think Emily being an ER doctor, being logical, [director] Yoko always says that without her eye problem, she could probably get out of the woods by herself,” the actress added. “She’s calm, she’s collected, she knows how to handle these things.”
When it came to portraying her character’s near-sighted condition, Francis connected to Emily because she herself “can’t really function” without wearing her contact lenses.
“Immediately when I got the script, I was like, ‘This is something I’ve already been afraid of,’” she said, referring to the likely scenario of losing her contacts. “As part of my prep, I took out my contacts and went outside and explored the world, and I took note of how it felt.”
Unseen takes viewers on a stressful ride with Emily, raising the stakes even more now that she is being hunted down and must navigate this terrain with barely any vision. How is it possible for anyone to accomplish this? Viewers can only find out when they watch the movie on Amazon Prime.
