A trailer for Marvel Studios next series, Secret Invasion, has been released showing off a new mystery within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starring a popular character within the franchise and expanding on a secret that has been hinted at many times throughout other series and films. An adaptation of Marvel Comics Secret Invasion storyline is coming soon, and audiences are excited to see how it plays a bigger part in the franchise going forward.
The trailer showcases the return of Nick Fury, played again by Samuel L. Jackson, dealing with the shapeshifting Skrulls. Throughout the Marvel shows and movies, the Skrulls have had hints and small showcases, but this will be the first time they have a main role as an antagonistic faction in this mini-series. The Secret Invasion trailer shows Fury returning back to the action to face off against the infiltrating aliens. Joined with Talos, played by Ben Mendelsohn, to fight against the Skrulls. A bombing shows the kick-off of events and a full war against this new foe.
The trailer shows scenes of numerous shape-shifting aliens that outnumber our heroes and secret alien labs filled with pods. It is not clear what these scenes mean other than that there are clearly kept secrets deep with this invasion. A conversation between Fury and Agent Sonya, played by Olivia Colman, talks about Fury’s involvement with these secrets while we see other agents and characters doing their own investigations.
The trailer shows no Avengers and talks about how they are not here for this conflict. Action scenes play out with a helicopter attack and Nick Fury facing off against a dozen armed men. Secret Invasion is shown to be a more serious series with no large display of superheroes but does feature a display of the alien’s powers. The main antagonist, Garvik, played by Kingsley Ben-Adir, seems to be the face of this faction, being the form the Skrulls all take. One of them showcases the ability to make his arms a mass of roots to slam into enemies, similar to Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. This all comes to an apparent climax with a one-on-one fight between Fury and Garvik in a facility with a strange glowing cage chamber.
A serious show without the usual heroes giving old characters the spotlight to fight a built-up faction throughout the franchise. Secret Invasion starts streaming on Disney+ on June 21st, 2023.
