The Hunger Games Prequel Trailer Has Arrived

Hunger Games Prequel Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

An Intense Look at The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

“It’s the things we love the most that destroy us.” The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, trailer has arrived, and it gives us a whole new personality to Coriolanus Snow.

The teaser begins by introducing us to the great and powerful Viola Davis, who brings forth the “leader of the Hunger Games themselves.” This is where we see Peter Dinklage taking a shot of something before talking to a crowd.

“I have summoned you all here for the 10th annual reaping ceremony in which we choose two children from each district to fight to the death in the Hunger Games,” Dinklage says as the camera pans to the young Snow (Tom Blythe).

Next comes a young girl wearing an old-fashioned corset dress walking into a crowd of district members: Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler). Lucy conveniently hails from Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) District 12, and she even takes that iconic, sarcastic bow before the leaders that the “girl on fire” took in the first Hunger Games installment.

The trailer then cuts to Snow’s role, which is the mentor who must “turn these children into spectacles, not survivors.”

“What does my mentor do besides bring me roses?” Lucy asks Coriolanus as he hands her one of his signature white flowers. “I do my best to take care of you,” he replies.

The video goes right into the film’s main tease for all Hunger Games fans: “Every saga has a beginning,” the screen reads before viewers are introduced to Lucky Flickerman — Caesar Flickerman’s relative!

“I’m Lucky Flickerman — the first ever host of the Hunger Games,” he says in front of a gigantic 1950s-esque television screen.

After that, the audience gets a full glimpse at Snow’s beginnings. He clearly forms a sweet and close relationship with Lucy in this story, but he’s also revealed to be a militaristic machine when he violently pops off a rifle in the middle of the woods during a separate scene. It’s obvious that Panem’s future president has a military background; we soon see him in full gear, saluting to another soldier before combat.

And then — drumroll, please — fans even see the young Snow shirtless! (Gasp) For those who aren’t familiar with Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel, they’ll just have to wait and see what Snow chooses in the end. We already know that he chooses power over love in his future presidential regime, but the question is how did he come to this soulless decision?

“The legend that changed the games begins here,” the teaser explains, while ending with Snow’s haunting phrase that he eventually tells Katniss about the “things we love.”

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes premieres in theaters on November 17, 2023.
