Is The Popular Award Ceremony In Danger?

2023 Writers Strike slated to take down the MTV Awards

The Hollywood Writers Guild has been threatening to strike for the 2023 MTV Movie, and TV Awards. The MTV Awards are one of the only few live shows and a strike would drastically affect the show’s production and may even cause a delay, postponement, or cancellation of the show entirely.

Not only are the MTV awards being affected, but late-night television shows, including Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Show with Steven Colbert, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Daily Show are all taking a break for the foreseeable future. Their solidarity with the strikers will also keep musical guests from appearing on shows such as The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Also slated to be nixed this weekend due to the strike is the mega buzzworthy debut of Pete Davidson’s comeback on Saturday Night Live this weekend (May 6) with musical guest Lil Uzi Vert.

What We Know About The Strike

The WGA has been in negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers over a new contract to replace the current one that expires in May 2023. This includes radically better wages and more control in general for writers. Both parties have been unsuccessful in reaching an agreement. If a deal isn’t reached, this will be the first writers’ strike in Hollywood since 2007.

2023 Writers Strike

The WGA said in a previous statement, “While company profits have remained high and spending on content has grown, writers are falling behind. The companies have used the transition to streaming to cut writer pay and separate writing from production, worsening working conditions for series writers at all levels…More writers are working at minimum regardless of experience, often for fewer weeks, or in mini-rooms, while showrunners are left without a writing staff to complete the season. And while series budgets have soared over the past decade, median writer-producer pay has fallen.”

The MTV Movie & TV Awards

As quoted from an MTV Awards production source from Variety “We are all collectively hoping for the best, we’re hoping for a resolution so that the show can continue on as planned.”

The MTV Awards are a significant event that acknowledges the top performances and achievements in the television and film industry. The nominees for best film are Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Elvis, Nope, Scream VI, Smile, and Top Gun: Maverick.

The best show category includes The White Lotus, Stranger Things, The Last of Us, Yellowjackets, Wednesday, Yellowstone, and Wolfpack.

The show airs live on Sunday, May 7, at 8 p.m. ET on MTV, simulcast on BET, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, and VH1.
