Apple TV+ Adds Another Chilling Mystery To Its Lineup
Apple TV+ has just dropped the first trailer for their latest show, The Crowded Room, a murder mystery thriller starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried, created by Akiva Goldsman. The series is inspired by the non-fiction novel, The Minds of Billy Milligan, which tells the story of the first person in American history to be acquitted of a crime on the basis of a certain mental disorder.
A New York Murder Mystery
Set in New York City in 1979, teenage outcast Danny Sullivan (Tom Holland) is arrested in connection to a shooting at Rockefeller Center which results in the murder and disappearance of several individuals. Investigator Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried) forces Danny to face his dark past as she tries to unveil the truth behind the crimes through rigorous questioning. The convoluted account of events, as well as Danny’s gentle appearance, leaves Rya doubting Danny’s guilt. She initially says that he “doesn’t really seem like a dangerous person,” telling a colleague that she suspects he may be innocent. However, there is also a moment where she implies that Danny is “the one pulling the strings,” leaving the audience in anticipation for more details.
Unraveling the Case
The trailer invites us to “unravel” the mystery along with Rya, already giving us clues into the case. Danny says he has “blank spots’ ‘ in his memory, indicating a potential mental illness or ptsd. We also see him suffering at the hands of some neighborhood bullies before luckily being saved by an older, mysterious man, who is not as innocent as he originally seems — after all, Danny says himself that he’s never been “lucky.”
Tom Holland’s Struggle With the Role
Tom Holland spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the intensity of playing the role, saying that there were moments he had difficulty separating himself from the character, driving him to contemplate shaving his head “to get rid of this character.” He also said it was “unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.”
Catch it on Apple TV+
Emmy Rossum, Sasha Lane, Will Chase, and Lio Raz also star in the series, along with guest stars Jason Isaacs, Christopher Abbott, Thomas Sadoski and Zachary Golinger.
A Crowded Room consists of 10 one-hour long episodes, the first of which will be released June 9th on Apple TV+, and subsequent episodes airing weekly.
