A Sequel to 2003 Freaky Friday Confirmed To Be In Development At Disney

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan set to reprise roles

Let’s Get Freaky…Again!

A sequel to Disney’s Freaky Friday has been confirmed to be in development, with stars of the 2003 film Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan planned to reprise their original roles. The news comes from an interview with the New York Times, where Curtis and Lohan talked about the film and its 20th anniversary. In the article, it was confirmed a sequel is being developed, with Elyse Hollander writing the screenplay.

The Fan-Favorite Original

The original movie starred Curtis and Lohan as Tess and Anna, respectively, a mother and daughter who magically switched bodies and gained a newfound understanding of each other’s lives. The film is a remake of the 1976 comedy of the same name, which was based on a 1972 book by Mary Rodgers (who also wrote the original film’s screenplay). A huge success both critically and commercially, the film has remained a beloved classic over the years.

Curtis And Lohan’s Return

Curtis, best known for her role as Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise, recently won the 2023 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, which won Best Picture at the Oscars last March. Lohan, known for leading roles in hit films like The Parent Trap and Mean Girls, has recently returned to film after a near-decade-long hiatus from the screen.

When Can We Expect To See The Film?

It is unknown when the film is set to release or when it is set to enter production, but Disney likely wants to capitalize on the current success of the original film’s stars with a sequel, especially given the current trend of reviving old properties for a new generation (see the confirmation of Beetlejuice 2). The original 2003 film, as well as the original 1977 version and the 2018 movie musical of the same name, can all be found streaming on Disney Plus.
