What To Expect From Joker: Folie à Deux

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga to star in “Joker” Sequel

In 2019, Joker became the globally highest-grossing R-rated movie ever (raking in a whopping $1.07 million) and was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning two (Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Original Music Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir). Now, the highly anticipated sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, is set to be released on October 4, 2024. Todd Phillips, who directed Joker, will direct, co-write (with Scott Silver), and co-produce (with Bradley Cooper) Joker: Folie à Deux.

Who Is In It?

Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his Oscar-winning role as Joker, while Zazie Beetz will reprise her role as Sophie Dumond. Also included in the cast are Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey.

Most notably, Lady Gaga is set to play Harley Quinn, previously (and typically) played by Margot Robbie (in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad). According to The Hollywood Reporter, however, Gaga’s Harley will dwell in a “different DC universe” than that of Margot Robbie’s.

In February, Gaga shared a first look at her Harley via Instagram:

What Is It About?

Plot details have yet to be confirmed, but viewers can speculate! Joker: Folie à Deux has been described as a musical psychological thriller film. Indeed, it appears as though Gaga’s musical talents will be, in part, what separates her Harley from Margot Robbie’s. And, the film’s title, Folie à Deux (a mental disorder affecting two or more individuals), gives us some insight into how its psychological thriller core might play out: Joker is rumored to meet his henchwoman and love interest, Harley, in Arkham Asylum.

Production started in December when Phillips posted a photo of Phoenix in character captioned “Day 1. Our boy. #joker.”

Gaga Giving Her Little Monsters A Behind The Scenes Look

Since then, fans have been afforded several glimpses into the world of Joker: Folie à Deux. In March, paparazzi and fan photographs revealed Gaga filming outside City Hall in Manhattan. Wearing clown-esque makeup and a slicked-back hairstyle, she was escorted up the steps of City Hall through a massive hoard of extras. The next day, more photographs revealed Gaga filming at the same location, this time without the striking makeup and hairstyle. In one fan video, an extra screams “You’re going to hell!” and Gaga responds by kissing her, stating “You’re going with me.”

Soon after, onlookers posted Gaga filming at the iconic staircase (Connecting Shakespeare and Anderson Avenues at West 167th Street in the Bronx) featured in Joker:  the “Joker Stairs.” It appeared as though she was performing a musical number.

Filming concluded in April. On April 5, Gaga posted a photo of herself as Harley captioned “That’s a wrap ❤️‍🔥 🎬🃏 X, Harleen.”

Phillips posted the same photo as well as the following picture of Phoenix as Joker:

He captioned it “That’s a wrap. Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom. Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together.”

Whatever the plot, Joker: Folie à Deux is guaranteed to be the movie of next fall. Be sure to catch it in theaters on October 4th, 2024! If one is needing a Joaquin Phoenix Joker fix, the film that started it all can currently be streamed on HBO Max.
