Nia Vardalos To Star and Direct My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

Nia Vardalos

Hitting Theaters Fall 2023!

Let’s hear a round of applause for actress and writer Nia Vardalos, as she takes the director’s chair (with equitable pay, I’m most certain) for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. Not that she hasn’t already been an award-winning actress for the past twenty years and award-winning writer of the first two My Big Fat Greek Wedding films; we now get to enjoy the story from her own lens.

The Franchise Background

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was originally written by Vardalos and based on her unconventional marriage outside the Greek world. The first My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) was based on Vardalos’ one-woman play, which she wrote and starred in. The play was picked up by Tom Hanks production company Playtone and made into the first film. Despite originally being an independent film with a $5 million budget, My Big Fat Greek Wedding was propelled into such success that it became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, earning a total of $368 million worldwide. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016) followed suit and outsold its projected gross of $15 million in the first two days. Both films grossed $457.1 million worldwide against a $23 million combined budget.

Give Us the Deets!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is excitedly being filmed in Greece. The storyline will continue with the Portokalos family discovering their roots as they navigate their homeland and unfamiliar cultural territory through hilarious trial and error. As always, the Portokalos family win the hearts of fans worldwide with their quippy and unabashed honesty about the hardships and joys that come with being a family.

The third film will pay tribute to the late actor Michael Constantine, who played the beloved patriarch Gus and passed away in 2021.

Casting and Production

The rest of the beloved cast is set to appear and reprise their roles: Nia Vardalos as Toula, John Corbett (Ian), Joey Fatone (Angelo), Louis Mandylor (Nick), Elena Kampouris (Paris), Maria Vacratsis (Aunt Freida), Andrea Martin (Aunt Voula), and Gia Carides (Cousin Nikki).

Elias Kacavas stars as Aristotle, is one of the new cast members this time around. In addition, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson will return to help produce the film alongside executive producers Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer and Steven Shareshian.

So wipe off your screens and reading glasses with some Windex in an ode to Gus because you’re not going to want to miss seeing My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 in theaters on Sept. 8, 2023.
