Slapstick With Good Chemistry

Jackie Chan fans and John Cena fans can rejoice together. A new trailer has been released for Hidden Strike — a high octane slapstick action film which sees the pair joining forces.

A New Iconic Duo?

Former wrestling icon John Cena and superstar stunts man Jackie Chan headline this adrenaline joyride. Cena seems to finally have found his stride with a recent slew of action films over the past few years. Recent projects include The Suicide Squad, The Peacemaker, and Fast X. He is also set to play a voice role in the upcoming TMNT movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Uprising.

Jackie Chan is certainly a name that needs no introduction, as he has starred in some of the most iconic action films to date as well doing a majority of his own stunts. Some of his most well known films are Rumble in the Bronx, Police Story, and Rush Hour. The latter film, however, is one his most well known films due to the onset chemistry between him and costar Chris Tucker. Based on the trailer, it seems like Cena’s character will be playing the straight man to Jackie’s goof.

What’s the Story?

The story isn’t anything too wild or out of the blue. It’s set in the near future, and an international gang of thieves are trying to pull off an elaborate oil heist. This is where the actors lead a team to save the day as they travel to a warzone to foil the thieves.

All About the Action

Both Cena and Chan are well known stuntmen, so it would be natural to expect some magic to happen. Based on the trailer, however, there seems to be a focus on CGI for some of the crazier scenes with explosions. While it remains to be seen whether this CGI is well implemented, there does seem to be some classic stunt work being sprinkled in. On a side note, there are plenty of shots seemingly reminiscent of Mad Max: Fury Road with the overly enthusiastic use of sand storms.

Final Thoughts

This trailer will likely leave many viewers with mixed feelings. Despite Cena and Chan’s involvement, the CGI seems to be the real star of the show. For better or for worse, this also means that viewers may be too distracted by the CGI to notice what’s going on in the movie. At some points, the CGI feels like it was generated by AI. It would be one thing to have some of the crazier scenes as CGI, but there are still shots which seem to be CGI’d without reason.

While this film is slated for theaters release this year, there is still no solid date set.

A lover of gore and over the top violence, no movie can make my stomach squirm. The only thing better than a bloody death scene is a well choreographed stunt. Whether it be action or horror, if it has blood in it, then I've likely already seen it.
