Cormac McCarthy Passes Away

The famed writer leaves behind a six-decade-long legacy

Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Cormac McCarthy, has passed away at 89. One of the most prolific American writers for the past 60 years, he began his career with The Orchard Keeper, went on to publish 12 novels over his six-decade-long career and ended his career with his latest novels, The Passenger and Stella Maris. Beyond books, McCarthy was also a screenwriter and playwright.

Cause of Death

McCarthy was confirmed dead by his son, John, on Tuesday at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The cause of death has been reported as natural causes, with no other details shared at this time.

Despite McCarthy’s firm resistance to book tours and signings, interviews, and writing blurbs for other writers, he was able to make a splash within the publishing world with his few novels. He rarely did interviews, but, most notably spoke with Opera Winfrey in 2007 to discuss The Road. He struggled to find an audience with his first five novels, not having his first hit until the release of his sixth book, All the Pretty Horses, later adapted into a film starring Matt Damon and Penélope Cruz.

Despite all of the negative reactions McCarthy has received throughout his long career regarding the subject matter of his novels, he was able to cut through the noise and find a spot with audiences. One of his more popular books, Blood Meridian, has even been questioned in regards to being considered the “great American novel.” A few of his books have been adapted into films, most notably No Country For Old Men. Written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, the film starred Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones, and Woody Harrelson, with the film going on to win four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Bardem.

The most notable aspect of McCarthy’s books is his style of writing. His style is known for utilizing little to no punctuation. Despite the lack of quotation marks and other proper punctuation, his style of writing doesn’t receive much criticism from readers. Beyond his style of writing, McCarthy also tends to explore the darkness of humanity within his stories, tackling a wide range of controversial subject matter.

Cormac McCarthy’s library of novels can be purchased on Amazon or at your local bookstore.
