Swinging Back to Back: What Dates Did Sony Set?

According to a recent report, Sony has set its future releases for November 8, 2024 and June 27, 2025, but the studio did not confirm whether or not they are held for Spider-Man flicks. The November release is labeled as “untitled Sony/Marvel” and is currently the only film on that day slot, so it has no competition. Meanwhile, the June release is labeled as “untitled Sony/Marvel live-action” and will currently compete with Disney’s live-action Moana remake.

The key notable element in these headings is “live-action.” If Sony took the time to label the second as such, does that mean that the first will be animated or some form of non-live-action?

Recently, Sony released Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which currently sits at just over 400 million dollars in box office revenue. The sequel in Sony’s animated Spider-Man universe has received immense praise, which allows fans to assume that animated projects could be in the future at Sony. Currently, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is set to release March 29, 2024, but given the information that actress Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy) has yet to record any of her dialogue for the film, it is unsure of whether or not Sony will be able to keep to that release date. The release date could speculatively be Beyond the Spider-Verse if it was pushed back. Therefore, it could be a fourth installment in the franchise, or it could be a new animated film about one of the many incredible characters in the two movies so far.

A Tangled Web: The Live-Action Sony-Verse

Amid the success of Sony Animation, the live Spider-Man universe projects have had a generally lackluster response from fans. Yet, the slate has a number of films in production including Kraven the Hunter, El Muerto starring Bad Bunny, as well as Madame Web, all of which have received prior dates. Venom 3 is also in pre-production but is on pause at the moment due to the WGA writers strike. Kevin Fiege has also indicated that a plan for Spider-Man 4 in the Tom Holland franchise is well on its way. This was confirmed by Sony CEO Tom Rothman, but is also holding because of the strike. These dates could be the possible planning of the next films in the Spider-Man franchise, but as of now, nothing is confirmed.

As far as Spider-Man goes, fans will be happy to know that he and his assortment of characters will continue to brace the silver screen. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is still in theaters and Kraven the Hunter will debut on October 6, 2023.
