George A. Romero’s Posthumous Film Twilight Of The Dead To Shoot This Year

George A. Romero

George A. Romero’s Legacy is Alive and Well.

George A. Romero is a legend that needs no introduction. As the father of the zombie genre, Romero is considered one of the biggest horror icons to exist. Despite having passed away in 2017, there are still plans to posthumously release one of his final movies.

Twilight of the Dead

Most familiar with Romero’s work will have watched his original zombie trilogy. This original trilogy includes; Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. Of course, there have been other entries made over the years, such as Diary of the Dead, which failed to garner as much success. While the idea of living dead existed before Romero’s trilogy (think Frankenstein’s monster), Romero is responsible for creating the attributes that would later become associated with them, such as eating human flesh.

This latest entry, Twilight of the Dead, has reportedly been in development since before Romero’s passing in 2017, and those who worked with him have continued working on the script since his passing. Shooting for the film is rumored to begin in late 2023.

The Story

Based on information released so far, the film will be set on an island. The story will follow the last human survivors caught between warring factions of zombies. If something about this sounds familiar, it’s because Day of the Dead, which is considered to be the last entry in the original trilogy, ended with a group of survivors heading towards a remote island as the planet is completely taken over by zombies. While nothing has been confirmed regarding this, it would be interesting to see some of the original cast of that film make a return.

Due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, it remains to be seen whether or not filming will take place this year despite being billed as an independent film. It would be a shame to see Romero’s last work end up dead in the water.

Stay vigilant for the latest news on this developing story. For anyone wanting to rewatch Romero’s trilogy, both Night of the Living Dead and Day of the Dead are available on various streaming platforms such as Hulu, Max, and Peacock.

A lover of gore and over the top violence, no movie can make my stomach squirm. The only thing better than a bloody death scene is a well choreographed stunt. Whether it be action or horror, if it has blood in it, then I've likely already seen it.
