Barbie Now Banned In Algeria For Promoting Homosexuality

Algeria is the latest of several countries to ban Barbie. Some countries that have banned the record-breaking film are Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon.

These countries have banned the film for numerous reasons, whether it be promoting homosexuality, differing morals, or contradictory cultures, Barbie has seen its fair share of controversy. Algeria listed its reasons for banning the film stating, in part, that Barbie “promotes homosexuality and other Western deviances.”

Capitalizing on Controversy

The film was also called out by critics for featuring a controversial world map. In the movie Barbie, Margot Robbie stands before a colorful, crudely drawn world map. The map features a dashed line on the side of a roughly drawn Asia. Many thought this to be a reference to the “nine-dash line.”

The nine-dash line is used on Chinese maps to suggest their control over a section of the South China Sea. This area of the Pacific Ocean that China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines all claim makes it a high area of contention.

There is a case to be made regarding the various controversies drawing even larger audiences to the box office. Audiences were already anticipating the movie, but now with both praise and criticism surrounding the film, viewers want to decide themselves if the record-breaking film is worth watching.

Warner Bros has said in numerous statements that the map featured in the film isn’t meant to reference any political inclinations. Despite its controversies, Barbie has dominated the box office since its release.

Smashing Box Office Records

Even with new controversies emerging in recent weeks, the film has remained at the top of the box office since its release in late July. Greta Gerwig, Barbie’s director, is the first solo female director to reach 1 billion dollars at the box office.

Although some may contribute the movie’s success to an excellent marketing campaign, it’s more than that. Gerwig has created a film that has become a worldwide success due to its fantastic casting, creative vision, and overall aesthetic Barbie has cemented its place as a cultural phenomenon.
