Everything We Know About Fingernails Starring Jeremy Allen White and Jessie Buckley

All The Available Information On The Upcoming Film

Jeremy Allen White’s stock as a star is at an all-time high. Ten years ago, for those who watched Shameless, he was Lip. For those who didn’t watch Shameless, he was maybe, maybe the awkward teen who made out with his mom (Naomi Watts) in Movie 43 (2013). Now, it’s an average of two finger swipes down an Instagram feed before he pops up pouting and brandishing his trademark biceps. The Bear is a hit, but even for those who haven’t seen it, Jeremy Allen White is now in their life.

Five years ago, Jessie Buckley was pretty much unknown to the masses. She appeared in Wild Rose (2018), a critically acclaimed yet moderately viewed film, as a foul-mouthed, formerly incarcerated Glasgow single mother with a penchant for country music. She was a niche darling, but after appearing in Chornobyl (2019), I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020), Fargo season four (2020), and being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Lost Daughter (2021), she is everyone’s darling (at the very least for those who get psyched for a weekend trip to their local Landmark Theater).

These two actors are white-hot at the moment, which makes their upcoming film Fingernails all the more exciting. Fingernails premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2023, and is set to have a limited theatrical release on October 27, 2023, before being available to stream on Apple TV+ on November 3, 2023. Here is everything you need to know about the film Fingernails, starring Jeremy Allen White and Jessie Buckley.

Background and Plot

Fingernails is a science fiction romantic psychological drama film written and directed by Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou. The film takes place in a world where scientists can calculate whether or not the love in a specific relationship is genuine through the removal and analysis of fingernails. A woman named Anna is in a long-term relationship with Ryan, but when she begins to question the validity of their love for each other, she gets herself tested. The results determine that she and Ryan are a perfect match, but she still doesn’t feel confident in this answer, so she finds a way to get a job at the institute in charge of this scientific love process to confirm or deny her doubts.

The film was announced in January 2021 as Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou’s English-language debut. Carey Mulligan was originally slated to star in the film, signing on due to being a fan of Nikous’ critically acclaimed Greek-language film Apples (2020).

In May 2022, Jessie Buckley’s casting was announced, replacing Mulligan in the lead role, and Apple Studios acquired the rights to the film. Principal photography took place in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, in October 2022 and concluded in December. The film premiered on August 31, 2023, at the 50th Annual Telluride Film Festival.

Who’s Involved

Along with Jessie Buckley as Anna and Jeremy Allen White as Ryan, other casting announcements include Riz Ahmed as Amir, Anna’s co-worker and trainer at the love institute and potential love interest, Luke Wilson as Anna’s boss at the institute, and Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek) as Amir’s girlfriend. The film was produced by Cate Blanchett’s Dirty Films, which has previously backed Todd Haynes’ Carol, starring Blanchett in the title role.

Is There a Trailer?

There is no official trailer for the film as of yet, however, on August 29, 2023, Apple TV released a first-look one-minute teaser for the film. In the teaser, Jessie Buckley sits in a seventies basement-style wood panel and carpet waiting room at what is assumedly the aforementioned love institute. The waiting room is complete with posters advertising the process, including artwork depicting fingernails. When an employee walks by, Buckley’s character asks about the constant rain noises being played on the speakers, and the employee responds that it makes people think of love. Then, the employee includes, “But it just makes me want to pee.” There is a clear sense of surrealism in the what-decade-is-this, simplistic decor, and a dry sense of humor in the film’s tone.

Early Reactions

The film was given a positive early review in The Hollywood Reporter and currently holds an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is still too early to get a full sense of the critical reaction to the film, but more reviews are sure to roll in once the film is released on October 27, 2023. A week later, the film will be available for streaming on Apple TV+, it will surely be exciting to see what the amply capable Jeremy Allen White and Jessie Buckley will be able to do in this ambitious new sci-fi romantic dramedy. If any two actors can handle that many genres in one film, White and Buckley have got to be them–they are true artist canvases.
