Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Trailer

The First Real Look Into The Next Chapter Of The Monsterverse

The latest teaser trailer for Apple TV’s live action kaiju series, Monarch: A Legacy of Monsters has just been released. The trailer showcases the cast, setting, and the intense premise of the Monsterverse’s latest story. Following the events of 2014, the Battle at San Francisco between Godzilla and two M.U.T.O caused shockwaves across the globe, with the mysterious organization MONARCH trying to find a way to survive a new onslaught of monsters. The series promises to explore the deep history of MONARCH and its scientists along with their discoveries of these ancient Titans.

What The Trailer Shows

Judging from the trailer shown, the series will follow the family of Lee Shaw, whose ancient history with Titans like Godzilla seem to span decades since the events of Castle Bravo. From the attempts to kill Godzilla in 1954 to the attacks at San Francisco, other characters shown also include Randa, a character introduced in Kong:Skull Island. Other things shown are designated monster attack shelters and the exploration of MONARCH files, showing how Godzilla’s resurgence put the whole world into a cautious state while searching for the monster.

Godzilla, along with a few other Titans both new and old, appear in several scenes showing the new threats that will be present in the series. Interestingly, Godzilla’s appearance is identical to his original look from the 2014 film, with his back spines returning to their original appearance among other reminiscent details.

Major Characters and Actors

Main character Lee Shaw is portrayed in two different time periods by Kurt Russell in modern times and his son, Wyatt Russell, in the 1950s era.  His character will play a major role in connecting the many storylines presented in the trailer. Another major character that gets focus in the trailer is Bill Randa, played by John Goodman from Kong: Skull Island. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will also feature a younger version of the character portrayed by Anders Holm along with a new character related to him named Cate Randa. The connection of these characters with MONARCH will drive much of the human plot in the series.

Placing The Timeline Of The Monsterverse

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will cover the events that show the origins of MONARCH, which went with the first Godzilla sightings in 1954 during their first attempts to destroy him. They then show a present plotline that takes place during the climax of Godzilla 2014 and before the timeskip towards Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Because these events will take place before King of the Monsters, classic Kaiju like King Ghidorah would not be active threats, and it gives the opportunity to introduce the other obscure Titans known by fans of the Monsterverse.

Exactly how many of these creatures will be shown and introduced are unknown, but the trailer did show a new flying bat-like creature and a massive crustacean-like creature facing off against these large spider monsters known to live on Skull Island. This at least shows there will be a diversity of locations and action sequences with the monster roster. Still, in order to not affect what is known in the films, certain creatures like Scylla, Behemoth, Rodan, and Tiamat may not make an appearance, since they woke up during the crisis against King Ghidorah.

What To Expect

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will start streaming on November 17 and will finish at ten episodes, ending on January 12, 2024. The first two episodes are scheduled to premiere together and promise a cinematic experience that rivals the movies released before. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will be released in conjunction with Toho’s Godzilla Minus One, which will have an international release in December, and the upcoming Godzilla X Kong: New Empire next year, unleashing a new incredible stream of Kaiju content for fans of the genre.
