Everything We Know About Our Flag Means Death Season Two

Season Two

The Return of the Revenge

Taika Waiti has built a multiverse of quirk and entered into that realm of creator where if he has a “directed, written, produced by” or “starring” credit in the trailer, people start licking their chops and rubbing their palms together like a cartoon dog with a t-bone steak.

The Max television series Our Flag Means Death is created by David Jenkins but clearly carries the banner of Waititi’s ship with its children’s book color palette, anachronistic humor, kiwi-sweet sensibilities, and, of course, Waititi himself playing one of the two main leads, Blackbeard. The show’s initial season was by most measures a success, with positive reviews from critics and a prompt order for a second season.

It’s been almost 18 months since the conclusion of season one, and with the premiere of season two set for October 5th, 2023, it’s time to recap and re-stoke the fire. Here is everything there is to know about season two of Our Flag Means Death, and be warned all ye who dare to keep reading, spoilers for season one lie ahead.

Season One Recap

The show is loosely based on the life of real-life “Gentleman Pirate” Stede Bonnet. In the first season, in 1717 Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) abandons his family and his life of privilege and wealth in Barbados to pursue his boyhood dream of being a pirate. He commands his ship the Revenge with little to no respect from his ragtag crew and has zero pirating skills or qualifications for being a leader other than the fact that his money has funded this venture. He is kind, artistic and seeks to maintain a level of open-mindedness and respect on his ship that would be welcome in a 2023 workspace–all qualities of a pirate looking to build a feared reputation. Eventually, Stede and his crew are surprisingly sought by the infamous Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) who finds himself embroiled in his own identity crisis looking to find meaning in the finer points of life beyond killing and pillaging. As the season reaches a conclusion, a romance develops between Stede and Blackbeard and they plan to sail away together and begin a new life. However, Stede abandons Blackbeard to seek out the family he left behind in order to get some closure, only to find that his family is truly happier without him around. In the final episode, Stede bids his family farewell and sets out to reunite with Blackbeard who, feeling jilted, has fully embraced the violent persona legend has built for him.

Season Two Cast

Our Flag Means Death will return to Max on October 5th, 2023 with three episodes and the remaining five episodes in the season will be released weekly. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will return as Stede and Blackbeard. The crew of the Revenge will also return with Nathan Foad as Lucius the scribe, Joel Fry as the musically inclined Frenchie, Samson Kayo as the sweetly empathetic Oluwande, Vico Ortiz as the skilled fighter Jim, Samba Schutte as the ship’s cook Roach, Ewen Bremner as the salty first mate Buttons, Kristian Nairn as the pyromaniac Wee John and Matthew Maher as the irritable Black Pete. Con O’Neill and Leslie Jones are also set to return as Blackbeard’s vicious first mate Izzy Hands and the fearsome Spanish Jackie respectively.

Minnie Driver will join the cast in season two as the real-life pirate, Anne Bonny. Actresses Ruibo Qian, Madeleine Sami and Anapela Polataivao will also join the cast. David Jenkins will continue to serve as creator, writer and showrunner.

What To Expect From Season Two

Along with getting the much-anticipated reunion between lovers Stede and Blackbeard, according to actor Con O’Neill, the second season will take on a darker and more violent tone than season one, along with hints of the sweetness and humor that made season one such a hit.

A trailer for season two was released on August 30, and based on the content it seems season two will deal much more heavily with the romantic relationship between Stede and Blackbeard. It seems the two will spend much of the season separated, with Stede seeking to reunite and a much more vicious and fearsome Blackbeard looking to forget.

Will There Be a Season Three?

If the show continues its viewership from season one, there is no reason why a season three may not be in its future. However, creator David Jenkins recently stated that if the show receives an order for a third season, it would likely be its last.
