Being Crazy Pays Off
Sometimes, being crazy pays off. It’s no secret that filming for a prequel set in the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory world has been in the works for quite a while. Unsurprisingly, the film is set to have a large cast of well-known faces set to star, including that of beloved British/90’s rom-com actor Hugh Grant.
Accomplishing The Impossible
For those unaware, Hugh Grant is set to star in Wonka, not as the titular character, but as an oompa loompa. Considering his impressive discography, how is this possible? Couldn’t he have landed a more impressive role? Is Hugh Grant officially washed up? The truth is actually stranger than possible fiction. It turns out that all it took to get Grant to sign up was to write him a letter. Director of the prequel, Paul King, wrote a letter to Hugh Grant essentially insulting him. In one line, King literally said that Grant was perfect for the role since he could play “washed up old hams.”
Not Too Far-Fetched
While King’s plan and its results may have seemed crazy at first, it becomes easier to understand once the reader takes a step back to look at the bigger picture. Paul King and Hugh Grant are no strangers, as they both worked on Paddington 2, another beloved children’s franchise. While Grant may have had a larger part in the former, it is not that hard to imagine King being able to convince Grant at all, although friend or not, it’s hard to imagine anyone including an insult in their letter.
Wonka is set to release this year in theaters on December 15. For those still curious about King and Grant’s relationship, feel free to watch Paddington 2, which is currently for rent from various platforms such as Youtube, Amazon, and Apple TV.

A lover of gore and over the top violence, no movie can make my stomach squirm. The only thing better than a bloody death scene is a well choreographed stunt. Whether it be action or horror, if it has blood in it, then I've likely already seen it. |
