‘Paranormal Activity’ is Coming to the Stage

The 2007 film Paranormal Activity is being adapted into a play by the same people who brought The Life of Pi to Broadway

Paranormal Activity is coming to the stage! Producer Simon Friend, known for adapting The Life of Pi and The Da Vinci Code to Broadway, recently picked up the horror movie series with talks of bringing it to London’s West End via his production company, Simon Friend Entertainment.

Playwright Levi Holloway is on board to pen the adaptation, with production still in early development. Holloway’s most recent work, another stage thriller, Grey House, spooked audiences and premiered on Broadway earlier this year.

Found Footage Flourishes

The popular found footage franchise began with 2007’s Paranormal Activity, created, written, and directed by Oren Peli. It is considered to be among the most profitable movies ever made, grossing $193 million worldwide, via The Hollywood Reporter. Considering the film’s incredibly small budget of fifteen thousand dollars, this was an incredible achievement that launched the franchise’s success. Since then, there have been seven sequels, some of those being prequels and a host of different media events and haunted houses.

Most recently, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, was released in 2021 on Paramount+ for at-home audiences. In total, the movies have grossed almost $900 million from theatrical release, according to The-Numbers.com.

From Film to the Stage

The films are based on various families who are haunted by the demon Asmodeus “Tobi” of the Book of Tobit, who preys on and terrifies several families. Each film features different characters, with recurring themes and connections between them, building upon a larger mythology around the demonic entities featured in the series.

Simon Friend is a veteran producer known for adapting movies for the stage, both on New York’s Broadway and London’s West End, with The Da Vinci Code and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, among other adaptations. Earlier this year, his stage production of The Life of Pi won three Tony Awards and has previously won five Olivier Awards.

The Paranormal Activity play is currently still in early development.
