WARNING: Major Spoilers of Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 236 lie Ahead
As the Jujutsu Kaisen Anime begins to dive deep into one of the most devastating arcs of the series, the manga concludes one of its most explosive confrontations. For those who read the last chapter, a winner has been decided, but as seen in recent leaks, a shocking event has just occurred.
The Battle of the Strongest Ends
Readers of Jujutsu Kaisen have been following the Battle of the Strongest since it began in chapter 221. The battle between the King of Curses Sukuna, and the strongest sorcerer of the modern age, Satoru Gojo, has been hard-fought and surprising.
Gojo has used every technique he knows and met Sukuna’s every move with skill and power. Many readers have been surprised by this bout as it’s appeared almost one-sided, with Gojo countering everything Sukuna has thrown at him.
However, they have also noted Sukuna’s lack of use in his abilities, resorting to only using Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique by relying heavily on Mahoraga. Gojo seemingly pushed Sukuna to his limits, making him feel nervous for the first time in over 1,000 years.
The battle seemed to end after Gojo outmaneuvered the king of curses and Mahorago to finally hit Hollow Purple, decimating Shinjuku and leaving Sukuna on the brink of death. With the battle at its end, Gojo was declared the victor.
Unfortunately, series creator Gege Akutami has become famous for subverting expectations. And in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, fate is cruel.
A Winner Has Been Crowned
Leaks from chapter 236 opened with Gojo talking with Geto, seemingly in a flashback of their time in school together. Gojo reflects on how he told his students that they are alone when they die, and it’s this line that the truth starts to set in.
The two reflect on Gojo’s battle with Sukuna and how he gave it everything he had. He does not, however, believe that Sukuna did the same and wonders if he could have beaten the curse user without Megumi’s technique.
In a sad moment, he tells his deceased friend that he wishes he could have been there to cheer him on, a comment that makes Geto noticeably tearful. Gojo is also surrounded by his friends Yaga, Nanami, Haibara, Riko, and Kuroi as they were in their school years.
The scene ends with Gojo bidding them all farewell before the story cuts back to a grim reality.
We then see Sukuna standing before a dead Gojo, his legs standing upright, but Gojo’s dismembered torso lying motionless on the ground.
A bloodied Sukuna explains to the dead sorcerer that when Mahoraga is attacked, he gradually adjusts to curse techniques over time and does so faster the more he is attacked. Sukuna had expected Mahoraga to be a “role model” who could surpass Gojo’s infinity.
As the fight progressed, the curse adapted to Gojo’s infinity so that it could counteract it. Whenever Mahoraga slashed, it differed from Sukuna’s abilities because it expanded its range beyond Gojo, targeting the fabric of space and the world itself and cutting through.
This effectively killed Gojo in a bloody fashion that has become synonymous with Akutami’s art style. According to Sukuna, Gojo’s infinity doesn’t matter when Mahoraga’s blade can cut through the entire world.
The chapter ends with Gojo’s students looking on in shock and horror as Sukuna commends Gojo for being his strongest-ever opponent and states that he will never forget him. He then says, “Don’t disappoint me,” something that will likely come back up later.
The chapter ends with the Sorcerer Hajime Kashimo racing to the battlefield to face Sukuna.
What’s Next?
Readers will remember that if Gojo lost the battle of the strongest, fellow sorcerers Yuta, Hajimo, and Hikari were to step in while Sukuna was weakened. It seems that Hajimo is the only one moving in to fight at the moment. It could be that the three will face the King of Curse one at a time.
Readers should keep in mind that the Jujutsu Kaisen series is expected to end this year. But considering there are still plenty of loose ends to tie up, this may not happen.
However, Gege Akutami does love his surprises, so there is no telling what will happen in the coming months. Fans will have to wait for chapter 237 to see what happens next.
