Michael Caine Questions the Need For Intimacy Coordinators

“We Never Had That in My Day," the Actor Said

When one thinks of intimacy on TV, it may conjure an image of their favorite actors getting it on. They may not, however, picture a 90-year-old acclaimed acting veteran, notably Sir Michael Caine. Recently, Caine threw his opinions into the ring on intimacy coordinators. Back in his day, they didn’t exist, and actors just felt their way around the scene, so to speak, but times have changed.

What Is an Intimacy Coordinator?

Intimacy coordinators work on TV and film sets and ensure that actors feel safe while filming sexual scenes. Their jobs are backed by The Intimacy Directors International nonprofit organization that was founded in 2016 during the #MeToo movement.

Furthermore, these coordinators are vital. Prior to working with them, actors were sometimes forced into compromising positions and would face retribution for speaking up. Now, they have an advocate who protects all individuals involved and, overall, makes things feel much less awkward.

Is Michael Caine Dissing Intimacy Coordinators?

During the promotional trail for The Great Escaper, Caine was interviewed and seemed flummoxed when he was questioned about intimacy coordinators on movie sets— possibly akin to how your grandfather would react if you mentioned anything alluding to sex: “Really? Seriously? What are they? We never had that in my day.” He’s not wrong. In Caine’s day, the movies, or “pictures” as they were referred to, were a different ballpark. Cinema tickets were cheaper, which was a nice bonus. The lack of diversity, however, was not so great.

Caine said he’s going to abstain from future sex scenes: “Thank God I’m 90 and don’t play lovers anymore is all I can say.”

Additionally, he discussed the changing landscape of cinema: “In my day, you just did the love scene and got on with it without anyone interfering… It’s all changed.” It appears that he appreciates the simplicity of days gone by without a third party interjecting. For some people, this makes sense since three’s a crowd after all.

Political Correctness

Caine offered his thoughts beyond intimacy coordinators by decrying aspects of political correctness. “But it’s dull,” he claimed. “Not being able to speak your mind and not being able to call anyone ‘darling.’” However, before one digs into him, he did follow that up with how he remains open to new information: “I like to learn from friends who are younger than me.” This willingness to listen to younger generations is refreshing.

Finally, considering how most would shudder being asked on the spot about sex scenes, Caine kept it classy and handled himself well. We could all learn a thing or two from this acting great. But sadly, it looks like we won’t be seeing him shirtless in films anytime soon.

The Great Escaper will be released in the U.K. on October 6th. The international release date is yet to be announced.
