The hit animated comedy will return with new voice actors this October
Adult Swim has released the official trailer of Rick and Morty’s seventh season, which is set to return on Sunday, October 15. This will be the first season without co-creator Justin Roiland, who was fired by Adult Swim and Warner Bros. Discovery after domestic abuse charges were leveled against him. Following Roiland’s departure, Adult Swim announced it would recast the titular characters’ voices with soundalikes.
Roiland’s Allegations and Replacements
Roiland also voiced the character of Korvo on HULU’s animated show Solar Opposites. After being dismissed from the Hulu show, Roiland’s voice was replaced by the voice of British actor Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey and Legion fame.
In March, the charges were dropped by the Orange County District Attorney’s office due to insufficient evidence. However, Roiland will not be returning and has been replaced as the voice of the show’s main characters. The new voices can be heard in the trailer. However, the actors have yet to be officially identified by Adult Swim.
Adult Swim’s Press Release
“It’s happening,” Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, said in a press release. “Thanks to the talent of the entire show team, we can all enjoy 10 new episodes that yet again raise the bar of comedy and animation. This season proves that the geniuses at work on ‘Rick and Morty’ are just getting started.”
Along with the press release was a season summary hinting at the voice recasting.
“Rick and Morty are back and sounding more like themselves than ever! It’s season seven, and the possibilities are endless: what’s up with Jerry? EVIL Summer?! And will they ever go back to the high school?! Maybe not! But let’s find out! There’s probably less piss than last season. “Rick and Morty,” 100 years! Or at least until season 10!”
Therefore, could it be safe to assume there could only be three more seasons of Rick and Morty left?
What Do The Fans Think So Far?
After the trailer dropped on Instagram, fans on social media had mostly positive reactions to the trailer. “There are times when they are indistinguishable from the originals and other times where you can hear the difference…the writing however, will be the key.” said Reddit user jedimasterlenny.
On Instagram, “Definitely a little different but not as bad as I thought it was going to be.” said @djob7 on Instagram.
Social media users on Reddit had more to say about the trailer, “yeah, every now and then there’s just a hair detectable difference. [The] Writing will be more important than just the acting,” said Reddit user mustardtruck.
So far, it’s possible fans are more concerned with the actual writing on the show than the voices of the cast.
Season 7 of Rick and Morty will premiere on Sunday, October 15, at 11p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim.
