Showtime and A24’s Upcoming Genre-Defying Series

Showtime and A24 recently released a teaser trailer for The Curse, their upcoming genre-defying series.

The Trailer

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder are married couple Whitney and Asher, the stars of a show entitled Flipanthropy, akin to HGTV shows like Fixer Upper. In between flipping houses, the couple is also attempting to have a child. But, as the title suggests, their life is upended by a mysterious curse.

The teaser trailer, only a minute long, reveals very little. It features Whitney and Asher filming some sort of commercial in front of a fire station. Their faces and voices are cheerful, but the camera zooms out ominously as a sinister tune repeats in the background. This unsettling tone obviously hints at something darker behind Whitney and Asher’s camera-ready smiles.

The Cast

Stone has most recently been in the spotlight for Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, a similarly genre-bending film that has received rave reviews since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Fielder, on the other hand, is best known for his hit TV show Nathan For You, which debuted in 2013 on Comedy Central. Nathan For You, also, is a fairly experimental film that received extensive critical acclaim.

Also in The Curse is Dougie (played by co-creator Benny Safdie), the shady producer of Flipanthropy, alongside a promising list of guest stars — Constance Shulman, Corbin Bernsen, and Barkhad Abdi will all make an appearance. Fielder, Nathan Zellner, and David Zellner serve as series directors. Fielder also co-created, co-wrote, and executive produced alongside Safdie. Also executive producing are Stone, Dave McCary, Ali Herting, and brothers Benny and Josh Safdie for their company Elara Pictures.

The first three episodes of The Curse are set to premiere at the New York Film Festival, while the 10-episode series will launch November 10 on Paramount+ and November 12 on Showtime.
