The animated sequel tops the box office with a $30 million opening weekend
What does a movie about a crazed serial torturer, a film about AI, and an animated feature starring a cast of adventurous pups all have in common? They shared the same theatrical release date, and though each film is significant in and of itself, Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie has edged out both Saw X and The Creator for the top spot at the box office. As if that wasn’t surprising enough, Saw X has landed in second place, while The Creator has found itself at the bottom of the pack after all the hype the AI film had accumulated.
A Pawsome Adventure
Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie follows the Paw Patrol gang as they gain mysterious powers after a meteorite hits Adventure City. However, Mayor Humdinger and a fellow mad scientist steal their powers and use them for evil purposes. The Paw Patrol gang comes together to fight against the evil forces, and Skye soon discovers that even the biggest of heroes come from the humblest of beginnings.
The animated film has already accumulated $23 million at the box office against a $30 million budget, a significant leap from the first movie’s box office numbers released in 2021, which gained $13 million on its opening weekend. Though the film was expected to do well, few would have guessed the pups would beat other big-name franchises and films. Nonetheless, Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie has landed on top for its opening weekend.
Saw X and The Creator
While the somewhat random trio of films have a clear, numerical ranking, each provides a very different experience for the moviegoer. Visitors to the theaters can choose between a feel-good family film, a gory, bloody movie that sees the revival of the infamous Jigsaw, and an intense action film that delves deep into the ethics and logistics of AI. Each is unique, forcing moviegoers to choose and recreate another Barbie/Oppenheimer situation.
Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, Saw X, and The Creator can all be viewed in theaters globally, and seeing as though their release day was so recent, it is still unsure when the films will be pulled out of the theaters.
