The pop star's groundbreaking concert is now dominating theaters

Taylor Swift’s record-breaking The Eras Tour concert may have finished its American leg of the tour, but fans will get the chance to relive the experience. In honor of Swift’s lucky number, The Eras Tour will play in theaters as a concert film starting on October 13, with the movie continuing the musical performance’s record-breaking streak.

According to AMC Theaters, the concert film has already earned over $100 million in advanced ticket sales, setting the movie to be one of the year’s biggest openings. Other estimates believe the movie will blow past this $100 million opening, which would set records not only among movies but specifically concert films.

What is the Eras Tour Film?

The film version of the concert is a recording of three various shows from Los Angeles. Six shows were performed at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, from August 3-5 and 7-9. Sam Wrench was hired to direct the film version of the concert. Wrench has previously directed the concert film for Lizzo titled Lizzo: Live in Concert in 2022, as well as Billie Eilish’s 2023 film version of the “Happier Than Ever Tour,” Billie Eilish: Live at the O2. According to theatrical expeditors, the runtime for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is clocking in at 2 hours and 48 minutes.

Film Records Broken

After tickets for the concert film went on sale, the movie exceeded the industry’s expectations, setting the record for single-day ticket sales with $26 million in North America. This record was previously held by Spider-Man: No Way Home, which set the record at $16.9 million in advanced ticket sales. Only five films this year have grossed over $100 million at the opening weekend box office: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Guards of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Barbie. Currently, the biggest opening weekend is held by Barbie at $162 million. If all goes well for the concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour has the potential to blow past these numbers and take the top crown.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is set to open in theaters on October 13.
