The World of The Walking Dead Reveals a Ton of News at NYCC 2023 Panel

From New York to France, Walkers Have Inherited the Earth

Fans gathered at the Empire State of New York Comic Con 2023 for TWD: Daryl Dixon’s season finale reveal panel. Showrunner David Zabel, producers Scott Gimple and Greg Nicotero, and TWD alum Norman Reedus dished the latest for fans of The Walking Dead’s expanding world. After The Walking Dead invaded the city that never sleeps in TWD: Dead City, the AMC network returned to New York for day one of New York Comic Con 2023. While there was no update on the second season of Maggie and Negan’s NYC spin-off, AMC revealed the latest news during last Thursday’s two-hour panel. Dead Talk Live’s crew and host John ‘Viz’ Vizaniaris was in attendance at the pop culture convention to get the latest about The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2 has been announced for a 2024 premiere with series alumni Melissa McBride to return as Daryl’s confidant Carol! Fans will be seeing the two characters slay walkers in France in season 2 of Daryl Dixon. Zabel had more to reveal for the world of the franchise with a trailer for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. Starring Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira with Terry O’Quinn of Lost attached to the show. Reuniting Rick and Michonne after the events of The Walking Dead in a spin-off centered around their characters.

Carol Returns in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2 will premiere in 2024, AMC confirmed during the panel. Via ComicBook, showrunner and executive producer David Zabel revealed that production on the second season will resume on October 20th in France following AMC’s agreement to film amid the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.

AMC announced that Melissa McBride, who played Carol Peletier on all 11 seasons of The Walking Dead, will reprise her role as a series regular for season 2 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. The series also has an official new title: The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol.

“I’ve known there was much more to be told of Carol’s story as I felt her so unsettled when we last saw her, as she watched her best friend, Daryl, ride away,” McBride said in an interview.

Carol appears at the end of the season finale of Daryl Dixon, arriving in Maine where she chases down a man riding Daryl’s chopper before capturing and interrogating him in classic Carol style.

“Apart, or (hopefully!) together, their stories run deep, and I’m so excited to continue Carol’s journey here. This team of storytellers has done amazing work to land these two established characters in an entirely new world to them, and I’m loving the discoveries!”

Season 2 is currently in production and will debut in 2024.

Scott Gimple on The State of The Show

Dead Talk Live’s Viz attended the conference, where Zabel, Gimple, Nicotero, and Reedus answered questions about the recent news. The 2023 year might be the dawn of a new era for The Walking Dead with a new show on the way, plus two more seasons of other subsequent shows taking place at the same time.

Viz: “2023 could be considered a crucial year for this franchise. The main show has ended, and spin-offs have begun. Now that the show is ending its first season with a great reception. What are your thoughts and feelings as to where the franchise is right now?”

Scott Gimple: “This has been sort of the third wave, and it’s been about making the shows very distinct from one another with Dead City, and Daryl Dixon both having a very strong individual voice. But they still have the same story values, and that has everything to do with Norman Reedus, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and with Lauren Cohan, these characters are the pillars of the show.”

Gimple has been closely attached to the show for many years, having served as producer and showrunner for The Walking Dead. He took over as showrunner during the fourth season and held the position until season eight, where he served as executive producer till the series finale in 2021.

“We counter with new stuff, New York, France, and new voices that tell those stories. So I think that this has been a really good year. Before we were sort of doing shows that complemented The Walking Dead in a lot of ways, and now we are doing shows that are very distinct from one another. The last few episodes of Fear The Walking Dead couldn’t be any more different than Daryl Dixon. It’s been a really good year working with new people”

Currently, he serves as Chief Content Officer. Gimple played a significant role in the development and direction of The Walking Dead during his tenure, and he has not shied away from his dedication to the show.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Trailer

Slated to premiere in February 2024, AMC released a reveal teaser for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which will reunite Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira).

While the duo were in separate places at the end of The Walking Dead, their connection was shown through images of a campfire and the sounds of their voices reciting words they were writing in a journal. The same journal, it turns out.

Multiple cast members have been confirmed. Pollyanna McIntosh will return as Jadis, a character she originally portrayed on The Walking Dead. Terry O’Quinn of Lost fame will appear in the role of General Beale.

The series is described as an epic story of love.

“Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?”

Scott M. Gimple will be executive producing alongside Lincoln, Gurira, Denise Huth (The Walking Dead), and Brian Bockrath (The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon). The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will premiere on AMC in February 2024.
