James Wan Addresses Possible 'Aquaman 3'

Will Aquaman Continue Or Get Lost In The Reboot Hype?

Director of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, James Wan, weighs in on the possibility of a third Aquaman movie. With the film coming to theaters this winter, perhaps the box office numbers will give more insight.

James Wan’s Thoughts

Though the first movie was received relatively well, the second has yet to hit theaters. A lot of press currently surrounds the film, both good and bad. James Wan has directed both the Aquaman films and spoke his thoughts on the possibility of a third in an interview. Wan stated, “I haven’t directed a third movie [in a series] before, so I’d be open to doing another [Aquaman] if I got the same freedom I’ve had on these first two. I’m not sure what direction [James Gunn and Peter Safran] are going in, though, so who knows? I’ve learned to never say never.”

Looking back on Wan’s previous works, what he said about making a trilogy for the first time is factual. Other movies that did not receive a third installment include the wildly popular films in The Conjuring universe.

DC’s Reboot Chaos

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will mark Jason Momoa’s last appearance as Arthur Curry in DC’s current universe before the big reboot. It’s been the talk of Hollywood and superhero movie lovers for months. Currently, there are no plans for an Aquaman 3 in the new DC universe. Earlier this year, Gunn and Safran revealed the new plan for the DCU, showing off what films will be in the first chapter. These were new films like Superman, Green Lantern, and Supergirl. However, there was no Aquaman on the list.

James Gunn also mentioned that some characters will carry over to the new DCU, including Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, John Cena’s Peacemaker, and the most recent addition of Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle, again, no Aquaman.

What Will Happen To Aquaman?

Despite all this, there is no guarantee on either side of the board. Aquaman might not join the new DCU. Or it might join after the numbers from the box office come in. James Wan is open for a third, and if the demand from the fans is there as well, then there’s always hope.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives in theaters on December 20.
