How the actor got into character to play the ‘King of Rock n’ Roll’

Some of the strangest stories out of Hollywood have come from the methods actors take to portray certain characters. Christian Bale is famous for going to extreme lengths for some of his films, such as losing an extreme amount of weight for his 2004 movie The Machinist or gaining weight for 2018’s Vice. Other bizarre stories have come from Wesley Snipes’ methods in the Blade films, as well as Heath Ledger’s ways of getting into the mindset of the Joker in The Dark Knight. Now Jacob Elordi, the actor portraying Elvis in the film Priscilla, has joined the ranks of other popular method actors.

For the Love of Bacon

Jacob Elordi revealed in a roundtable interview with Entertainment Weekly that he ate a pound of bacon a day to portray Elvis Presley. During the interview, Priscilla director Sofia Coppola weighed in about the actor’s experience. “You ate a lot of bacon,” Coppola said to Elordi. “Priscilla [Presley] told us that Elvis liked really burnt bacon.”

“I averaged, like, a pound of bacon a day,” Elordi said. “It’s not that noticeable because I’m quite long, but I was the biggest I’ve ever been.”

During the interview, Priscilla star Cailee Spaeny mentioned the famous Elvis story about the “Fool’s Gold” loaf. The singer’s beloved sandwich consisted of a pound of bacon, a loaf of sourdough bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a jar of jelly, making for a total of 8,000 calories. “Fool’s Gold” was discovered in Denver at the Colorado Mine Company restaurant. The sandwich was so beloved by the musician that there was a time when he flew from his home in Graceland to Denver in a private jet with some friends solely to order the sandwich. According to the story, the restaurant owners greeted the men with a pile of sandwiches, with Presley reportedly enjoying them without leaving the hangar.

A Hollywood Power Couple

Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, Priscilla recounts the wife’s story behind the ‘King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.’ When 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu is approached one day at a diner by a man claiming to know the renowned Elvis Presley, her life instantly changes from small, military family life to rockstar stardom. As she grows closer to the superstar, she quickly unravels someone else in their private moments, turning the fantasy depiction of love into reality.

Priscilla is currently playing in theaters.
