Netflix has unveiled its highly anticipated live-action remake of Yu Yu Hakusho with it’s first teaser trailer. Set to premiere on Dec. 14 2023, the teaser was revealed during Netflix’s Geeked Week, a virtual event that runs from Nov. 6 to Nov. 12.
The show will tell the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a teenager who is killed by a car while trying to save a child’s life. However for him, death is not the end, he returns to the human world as a Spirit Detective and is tasked with solving paranormal mysteries in the world of the living.
The anime debuted 20 years ago on Cartoon Network, originally adapted from a manga into one of the most beloved anime to this day.
Netflix announced a live-action adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga in late 2020.
Urameshi will be played by Takumi Kitamura (Tokyo Revengers), and he will be joined by Jun Shison (Bubble, Battle of Supreme High) as the fox demon Kurama; Kanata Hongo (Kingdom, Attack on Titan) as Hiei, the Master of the Evil Eye; and Shuhei Uesugi as Kazuma Kurabawa
The series is directed by Shō Tsukikawa and written by Tatsurō Mishima alongside Togashi himself. It is developed by Akira Morii and Kazutaka Sakamoto.
The original Cartoon Network show premiered on Toonami and is based on the manga series of the same name, which ran from 1990 until 1994. The manga was then adapted into an animated series that aired from 1992 to 1994. More than 78 million copies have been sold worldwide, making Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the bestselling manga series of all time.
Yu Yu Hakusho will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, December 14.
