‘Terminator: The Anime Series’ Coming Soon to Netflix

“Two days from now, everything changes.” When your boss utters these words, your brain goes to several places and none of them are good. You wonder: is the company getting restructured? Or more likely, are you being fired for downloading illegal “content” on your server? (They were bound to catch on one of these days.) During Geeked Week, Netflix released these famous last words in their teaser for Terminator: the Anime Series.

A Prequel to ‘Judgment Day’

In the 35-second trailer released yesterday on X, formerly known as Twitter, an attached prompt reads: “On August 30th, 1997…two days from now…everything changes.” Unfortunately, we don’t see accompanying footage with the verbiage. Even the initial Blumhouse teaser trailer for Imaginary—pretty much a mindfulness meditation practice—gave us some flashing imagery during the latter half. Therefore, this teaser tests our limited brainpower to generate excitement.

Fortunately, the date in question that the Netflix overlords teased clues us into what to expect in this Terminator-universe, eight-episode series. Moreover, in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991,) it’s revealed that this is when AI network Skynet starts to overtake humanity, thus sparking the rage against machines—or more accurately, the machines raging against us.

For those unfamiliar with the phrase “Terminator,” it refers to a cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) that was sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and her son, John (Edward Furlong,) to stop them from taking down Skynet.

Based on this info, we can glean that this Netflix series will be a prequel to Judgment Day. And while we may have seen Schwarzenegger’s muscled form onscreen, we have yet to see an animated version brought to life.

Unfortunately, just as we don’t know the fate of humanity when it comes to AI (like evil ChatGPT,) we don’t yet know the release date for this Netflix series. In the meantime, watch The Terminator, currently streaming on HBO Max.
