Art’s Bringing The Christmas Spirit Next Halloween

The now-turned-horror icon, Art the Clown, is ready to add a reason to be scared of Santa Claus.

The teaser trailer for Terrifier 3, shown only exclusively in theaters during the re-release of Terrifier 2, has dropped online. The teaser presents Art wearing a Santa costume, showing off the shift from Halloween to Christmas. While story details are not given, the trailer does allude that the film will have a darker and more unsettling feel, more so than what the franchise already portrays.

The Scariest and Darkest Yet

Damien Leone, the writer and director of the Terrifier franchise, explained his approach for the third installment to Variety. He explained that he wanted to shift back to the first film’s tone instead of diving deeper into the supernatural and fantasy approach taken with the sequel. In describing the third film, Leone stated it would be the “scariest and darkest” yet.

Leone told Variety, “I want to shift back a bit to the tone of Part One, which I felt was a little more simplistic and old school, gritty slasher.” Leone further stated, “I want this one to go back in that direction, and I want this to be the scariest one of the trilogy.”

The Franchise Thus Far

Although there are currently two Terrifier films, Art the Clown, the main antagonist, has appeared in other projects. He originally appeared in two short films, The 9th Circle in 2008 and Terrifier in 2011. The character made his first feature film debut in the 2013 anthology movie All Hallows’ Eve. From that film, Leone took the segment featuring Art the Clown and spun it off into its own full-length movie in 2016’s Terrifier.

Taking criticisms for the first film’s lack of narrative and character development, Leone went on to write a character-driven screenplay, which evolved into Terrifier 2. While still centering around Art, the movie introduces Lauren LaVera as Sienna Shaw, the “final girl” for the franchise. The film quickly became a massive success, garnering $15.7 million at the box office based on a $250,000 budget. It was positively reviewed by critics and audiences, with most praise going towards Thornton and LaVera’s performances.

Terrifier 3 is currently scheduled to release in theaters on October 25, 2024. A streaming release on Cinverse’s Screambox is expected to be announced shortly after the release.

Terrifier 2 is currently available to stream on the Roku Channel.
