Is the MCU in trouble?
The MCU has had quite an up-and-down year, swinging between huge successes (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) and big misses (Secret Invasion). Now The Marvels is finally out in theaters, and the opening weekend numbers prelude to what will probably become the MCU’s biggest box office bomb of all time.
The MCU’s Lowest Box Office Weekend Of All Time…
Initial estimates for The Marvels’ box office opening weekend indicated a potential gross between $60 and $80 million. Yesterday, the official figures came in – The Marvels debuted at a mere $46.1 million in its first 3-days. That marks the lowest opening ever for an MCU film, snatching the title from The Incredible Hulk, which debuted at $55.4 million back in 2008, at the dawn of the MCU.
The film is a sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), and by comparison, its predecessor made over $153.4 million in its opening weekend. That number sure was inflated by the fact the film came out squeezed between the box office juggernauts Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, but it’s baffling that a sequel to such a hit ends up grossing less than a third of it. Internationally, The Marvels stands at $110.3 million, which is lower than the $140 million analysts predicted last year and down more than 60% compared to Captain Marvel’s $302.4 million international opening weekend.
And Possibly The Most Devastating Flop For The Franchise
Of course, it’s still too early to know what The Marvel’s final worldwide gross will be, but some predictions can be made based on this disappointing initial result. First off, the film’s opening weekend is on par with those of some other major 2023 box office bombs like The Flash, which opened to a slightly higher $55 million. Secondly, a number that’s even more concerning is that of the budget – more than $220 million, which is considerably higher than Captain Marvel’s $175 million. The only hope this film has is to have strong legs in the next few weeks, but considering its “B” grade on CinemaScore, as well as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes coming out this weekend, The Marvels will be lucky to even break the $300 million mark worldwide – a devastating result for the MCU.
The Marvels is directed and co-written by Nia DaCosta, and it stars Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris. It’s currently in theaters.
