The Multiverse Saga Introduces Even More Branching Timelines
In 2021, Marvel released What If…? as a Disney+ exclusive animated series. What If…? — based on the comic series of the same name — takes a look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe and envisions wild hypothetical scenarios, like “What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?” and “What If… Ultron Won?” While a second season has long been announced, Marvel has finally dropped their first trailer, showing fans what to expect from the upcoming release.
More Stories from the Watcher
In this trailer, What If…? brings characters from its first season into the fray as well as other familiar MCU faces. The trailer opens with scenes from an episode that ponders what the Avengers would have looked like if they were formed in the 1980s. The team features the Winter Soldier, Hank Pym’s Ant-Man, King T’Chaka’s Black Panther, Bill Foster’s Goliath, and an unnamed Kree soldier as they go up against Ego and Peter Quill.
As the trailer continues, clips from the rest of the season show Odin leading a war against Wenwu — aka the Mandarin — from Shang Chi, Iron Man, and Gamora duking it out in the Grandmaster’s arena from Thor: Ragnarok, and the return of both Captain Carter and Doctor Strange Supreme from What If…? Season 1. Popular characters like Thanos, Scarlet Witch, Nebula, and Killmonger can also be seen sprinkled throughout the trailer in unknown roles. The trailer ends with a look at Happy Hogan crawling through the vents in Avengers Tower as he attempts to save Christmas in a Die Hard-inspired gag.
Just in Time for Christmas
The Christmas theming of the Happy Hogan-centric episode isn’t just for show. The first episode of What If…? Season 2 releases this holiday season on December 22nd. If that isn’t exciting enough, the trailer also revealed that viewers will be able to “Unwrap 1 episode every day for nine days straight.” This means that from December 22nd to the 31st, new episodes of What If…? will be released to Disney+ on a daily basis.
