‘Loki’ Creator Michael Waldron Hired To Write ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’

Could the MCU's new ‘god of stories’ be the central focus of the next two Avengers films?

Marvel Studios is pulling out all the stops to try and salvage their ‘Multiversal Saga’ by tapping Loki creator Michael Waldron to write Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The Multiverse of Madness screenwriter had previously been brought on board to pen its predecessor, Avengers: Secret Wars, the final installment of Marvel’s Phase 6 slate of films. Waldron will now write both Avengers films for the studio, concluding its ‘Multiversal Saga’ storyline.

Fixing a Multiversal Mess

Waldron comes on board following Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness’ departure. Loveness, who wrote an earlier draft of the upcoming Avengers film, left the project back in May due to “creative differences” with the studio. Early reports claimed that the writer refused to change his initial draft after Marvel execs decided to change the film’s story direction.

The upcoming Avengers film is also continuing to look for a new director after Daniel Dustin Craig’s recent exit. The Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director stepped away from the film just weeks ago to focus on his other Marvel projects, which include a sequel to his 2021 hit Shang-Chi and the upcoming Wonder Man series for Disney+, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. No word yet on who the studio has in store to take over Craig’s directing duties, but given the film’s May 2026 release date, it’s safe to assume Marvel is narrowing down their pick.

A Loki-centric Conclusion?

Now that Waldron is attached to writing both Avengers films, it’s likely that Marvel is shaping up to restructure their most recent saga. The studio has been dealing with much controversy lately with their Kang Dynasty star Jonathan Majors’ current legal troubles and a reported restructuring of their current projects and storylines. It is also up in the air if Marvel will continue to keep Majors in future projects, as rumor reports indicated that the studio was looking to replace Majors’ as Kang with another actor or completely replace his character with another Marvel villain like Doctor Doom.

However, given how Loki Season 2 concluded, it’s possible that we might get a more ‘Loki-focused’ storyline to divert from Majors’ Kang the Conqueror. Now that the former ‘god of mischief’ has become the ‘god of stories’ and guards the branches of the multiverse, it’s not too unlikely that Waldron will include Loki in a much more significant role. Whatever the outcome, now that Waldron has taken over writing duties for both Avenger films, Marvel’s Phase 6 looks to be heading in the right direction again.

Until then, fans will just have to wait to see how Avengers: The Kang Dynasty shapes up until its May 1, 2026 release.
