It’s about that time of year, folks. The holidays are here, which means that it’s time to whip out the ‘ol spatula, dust off the decorative cutlery, and get cooking! Everyone knows the traditional mashed potatoes, stuffing, and ham dishes. But at this point, these are all old and tired, and the last thing any chef wants to hear is their grandfather yelling about the cranberries being too bitter again. If you’re looking to spice things up in the kitchen or just having trouble thinking of entrées for this year’s holiday feast, then look no further. Perhaps some pizza balls from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or a strawberry cake from Super Mario could entice those taste buds. Whatever the case may be, from chocolate cakes to hearty meats, pop culture has it all. Here are some of the top fictional foods to try for this year’s holiday dinner. 

10. Castella Cake (Demon Slayer

For those who are anime fans, you might know how these types of shows love to flaunt the most heavenly and mouth-watering foods on screen. It’s not fair how these characters get to munch down on some of the most savory delicacies, and there’s always the foodie-type side characters that are seen gobbling up every last bite. Demon Slayer is no exception, showcasing some of the most realistic, sultry, and sweet dishes in anime. In Season 3, “Swordsmith Village Arc,” a minor character named Gotō makes an appearance. Gotō is a member of the Kakushi, a cleanup and caretaker crew that helps assist the demon slayers when they lodge at the demon slayer headquarters. 

In the first episode, he finds Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu in bad shape after their battle in Season 2, or the “Entertainment District Arc.” Season 3 opens with him taking care of Tanjiro, and in one of these instances, he is found bringing over some castella cake while Tanjiro’s in a coma. Castella cake is a Japanese honey cake that rises only through egg foam. With that said, follow this recipe (by foodkagechris on Instagram) for the best results: 


  • 20g brown sugar
  • 3 egg whites (100g)
  • 8 egg yolks (125g)
  • 40g sugar
  • 100g glucose syrup
  • 20g honey
  • 70g flour
  • 15cm/6” baking pan. 


  1. Pour brown sugar into a baking pan. Separate your eggs. You need 8 yolks and 3 whites. Mix the egg white and add the sugar while mixing.
  2. Stir the meringue until smooth. Mix together the meringue and egg yolks.
  3. Put the glucose syrup and honey in the microwave until it becomes liquid and mix. Add and mix into egg yolk mixture. 
  4. Put the flour through a sieve. Mix slowly with a whisk.
  5. Cut the parchment paper and place it in the baking pan. Pour the mixture into the baking pan. Remove the bubbles with a wooden stick.
  6. Preheat oven to 180°C/360°F for 15-20 minutes. Then 140°C/280°F for another 40 minutes. Use upper and lower heat settings in the oven.
  7. When the top turns golden brown to slightly darker brown, turn the heat down to the second temperature.
  8. Let the cake cool down a bit. Then, wrap it in plastic wrap to keep it from drying out. Turn the cake over and leave it upside down overnight at room temperature.
  9. Unpack and cut into the desired shape.

9. Remy’s Ratatouille (Ratatouille

It’s not a proper fictional food list if Remy from Ratatouille is not mentioned. Ratatouille is probably one of the most recognizable food movies in cinema. The film quickly became a Pixar classic due to its cast of lovable characters, quirky sense of humor, and selection of delicious foods. Sure, the characters and the story are enjoyable, but the best part of this film is seeing all the ingredients and the chefs cooking all the scrumptious meals. Some of the most iconic scenes include Remy and Emille trying different combinations of fruits and cheese, fixing Linguini’s soup, helping Linguini cook spaghetti, and Colette having Linguini listen to the sound of bread crunching. But of course, who could forget when Remy, Linguini, Colette, and the rest of the rats help cook the Ratatouille dish?

This is Remy’s most iconic dish and definitely deserves a try. Follow this recipe (by allrecipes.com): 


  • 6 ounces of tomato paste
  • ½ onion (chopped)
  • ¼ cup minced garlic
  • ¾ cup water
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • A taste of salt and ground black pepper
  • 1 small eggplant
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 yellow squash
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves
  • 3 tablespoons of mascarpone cheese. 


  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F
  2. Spread tomato paste onto the bottom of a 10-inch square baking dish. Sprinkle with onion and garlic. Stir in water with 1 tablespoon olive oil until thoroughly combined. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Arrange alternating slices of eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, red bell pepper, and yellow bell pepper, starting at the outer edge of the dish and working concentrically towards the center. Overlap slices a little to display colors.
  4. Drizzle vegetables with the remaining 3 tablespoons of olive oil; season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with thyme leaves. Cover vegetables with a piece of parchment paper cut to fit inside.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven until vegetables are roasted and tender, about 45 minutes. Serve with dollops of mascarpone cheese.

8. Tiana’s Beignets (The Princess and the Frog)

In the movie The Princess and the Frog, Tiana is seen working as a waitress serving these powdery delights. They may not look like much as far as pastries go, but the movie certainly makes these treats look extremely irresistible. This delicious treat is worth having a spot on the bucket list of foods to try, as it’s just that good.

  • ½ teaspoon dry yeast
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 egg
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • vegetable oil (for frying) and powdered sugar. 


  1. Sprinkle yeast over warm water in a small bowl. Stir to dissolve.
  2. Add sugar, shortening, salt, heavy cream, egg, flour, yeast, and boiling water to a large bowl. Mix together.
  3. Rest the dough mixture for 30 minutes. 
  4. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thickness and cut into individual squares. Let dough rise for 2 hours in a warm area.
  5. Heat vegetable oil to 350° and fry beignets for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Dust warm beignets with powdered sugar.

7. Premium Meat Bowl (Dragon Ball Z

Looking for more anime-style dishes? Try this one on for size. Dragon Ball Z has some of the coolest action scenes in anime. The show is definitely worth a view, known mostly for its fighting sequences, intense screaming, and cool character designs. But something that is surprisingly overlooked when it comes to this anime is how great the food scenes are. From Dragon Ball Z to Dragon Ball Super, there are various moments where the characters are slurping up some of the best-looking noodles and meats. And when it comes to Goku, everyone knows that that man (alien?) just loves to eat meat. In the video game Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, there is an option to cook various meals should you have the right ingredients for certain dishes. One of these dishes is the premium meat bowl, which includes pork meat and rice. 

This is the perfect dish to serve as it is rather large, and a Saiyan’s appetite can be enough to feed multiple people. Here is the recipe for those who are interested (by Babish Culinary Universe): 


  • 5 lbs of pork meat 
  • 30 cups of rice (roughly the max capacity for 3 rice cookers). 
  • 1 onion 
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce. 
  • 400g white sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 200ml soy sauce
  • ¼ cup sake
  • ¼ mirin
  • ½ cup honey 


  1. Cut pork belly into ½-inch thick slices.
  2. Cook 3 rice cookers’ worth of rice.
  3. Using a large frying pan (or 2 medium pans), lay the pork belly slices, cooking for 5 minutes on each side on medium-high heat.  
  4. Boil 1 soft-boiled egg and set aside for later.
  5. Mince 1 large onion, and in a frying pan, caramelize it in two tablespoons of butter over medium heat for around 10-15 minutes. Once it has a brownish color, throw in ¼ cup of honey, ¼ cup rice vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Mix until it becomes an onion jam consistency and set aside for later. 
  6. For the glaze, mix 400g of white sugar and 2 cups of water together in a large frying pan until boiled and with an amber color. Add 1 cup of water to dilute the glaze, 200 milliliters of soy sauce, ¼ cup of sake, ¼ cup of Mirin, and ½ cup of honey.    
  7. Using a large frying pan, lay the pork belly slices into the glaze and cook for around 5 minutes on medium heat. 
  8. Using a large bowl, assemble rice into a mountain shape first. On the top of the rice, evenly distribute the onion jam. Then, assemble each pork slice onto the rice in a rotational manner, peaking to the top of the rice mountain. 
  9. Garnish by slicing one green onion and sprinkling on top. Slice the soft-boiled egg and place on top. 

6. Pokémon Curry (Pokémon Sword and Shield

The Pokémon video game franchise titles are not too well known to have mechanics involving food. However, ever since Pokémon Sword and Shield’s release back in 2019, the games have begun showing a bigger emphasis on implementing different styles of food for players to cook. In Sword and Shield, players had the ability to traverse the world and collect various ingredients like eggs, potatoes, or beans to make curry-style entrees for their trainer and Pokémon to eat. Doing so may restore the Pokémon’s health points, power points, and status conditions or give the Pokémon experience points depending on which curry dish is cooked. It may also help Pokémon become closer to their trainer. There are many different kinds of curry recipes, from sausage curry to apple curry, so it’s hard to choose just one of them.

But perhaps one of the easiest to recreate is the pasta curry. Follow this recipe (by Babish Culinary Universe):  


  1. For the curry roux, cook and mix together 7 tablespoons of butter with 3 ½ ounces of flour, constantly stirring until a peanut butter consistency. 
  2. Add ¼ cup of S&B curry powder, 1 tablespoon of garam masala, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and 1 teaspoon of MSG for seasoning. 
  3. Once all ingredients are mixed together, pour into a small dish lined with parchment paper. Refrigerate until hardened. 
  4. Peel and cut 4 potatoes, 4 medium carrots, and 2 medium onions. Along with these, peel and grate 1 Fuji apple, 4 peeled garlic cloves, and a 2-inch piece of ginger (sliced and peeled).  
  5. Take the ribeye steak and slice it into small pieces.
  6. In a large pot over an open flame, mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil and sliced onions until brown. Follow up with the sliced ribeye until brown. Add in sliced carrots, potatoes, apple, garlic, and grated ginger. Add 5 cups of beef stock, 2 tablespoons of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of honey, a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce, and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Stir well and let it sit for about an hour. 
  7. Cut the curry roux into several small blocks, and using a ladle, place the blocks inside and whisk before adding to the pot. 
  8. Cut 3 blackberries, 4 blueberries, 2 strawberries, and 1 peach. Add berries into the pot, stir, and put out the fire. 
  9. Rinse 4 cups of Japanese short-grain rise about 3-4 times to eliminate excess starches. Add rice into a large pot and pour in water 1 inch above the rice level. Add in 1 tablespoon of turmeric and cook until the rice is nice and fluffy (not soggy).
  10. Once the rice is finished, assemble it onto a plate in a mountain shape. Pour the curry roux on one half of the rice mountain.
  11. Cook half a handful of pasta, adding in salt until boiled. Add and cook marina sauce with a slight dash of ketchup in a medium frying pan. Once mixed, add 1 tablespoon of butter and mix. 
  12. Using a pair of tongs, grab the pasta and place it above the rice, rotating the plate as you go. Garnish with a sprinkle of chopped parsley and 1 parsley leaf in the middle. 

5. Cheesy Meat Bowl (The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild introduced a new cooking feature that has not been implemented into previous versions of Zelda games. Instead of using potions and breaking pots to find hearts, players could explore the world as Link, hunt animals, and collect fruits, peppers, and mushrooms. These items could later be put into a cooking pot and be used to create all kinds of dishes. With the right amount of ingredients, players would be rewarded with a dish that could restore hearts or add a special effect like heat resistance. This feature was expanded upon in Tears of the Kingdom and included many new dishes. One of these dishes is the cheesy meat bowl, which can be cooked by mixing together Hateno cheese, raw meat, Hylian rice, and rock salt. 

While these ingredients do not exist in the real world, here is a recipe (by Babish Culinary Universe) that can be used to simulate the dish: 


  • 2 cups Jarlsberg cheese (grated)
  • 1 cup Gouda (grated)
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • A dash of salt and pepper
  • Prime short-rib meat
  • 5 cups rice.


  1. Grate 2 cups of Jarlsberg cheese and 1 cup of Gouda. 
  2. In a small saucepan, melt ¼ cup of butter. Add in ¼ cup of flour and slowly pour in 2 cups of whole milk, a little bit at a time in small stages. To ensure that there are no lumps, whisk the milk between each stage. 
  3. For a mornay sauce, add 3 cups of cheese and whisk until it is slightly thick and gooey. Season with a dash of salt and pepper. Set aside for later. 
  4. Remove the bone and delicately slice your prime meat into ½-inch chunks. Season with sea salt. 
  5. Pour two tablespoons of olive oil into a large frying pan and lay the prime meat slices. Cook for around 2 minutes on each side until browned. Season with salt as needed. 
  6. For the glaze, add some honey as needed and stir with the beef in another pan until it gives the beef a nice thin glaze. 
  7. Cook around 4-5 cups of rice in a rice cooker. 
  8. Using a bowl, place a generous amount of the rice. Insert a few Shiso leaves in the back of the bowl behind the rice to provide color and posture. Arrange the meat slices on top, resembling a rose pattern. Delicately pour the mornay sauce over the top, trying to fill in the cracks but showing off some of the meat.  
  9. Garnish with red chili threads and a little bit of scallion on top. 

4. Strawberry Pie (Celeste

Celeste is a platform game developed and published by Maddy Makes Games. The player plays Madeline, a young woman who struggles with anxiety and depression as she climbs Celeste Mountain. In the game, players can collect strawberries, which will later unlock a scene where Madeline bakes a strawberry pie. This would make a great addition to a dessert table, as most players may agree that it looks absolutely delicious, given its cartoonish gameplay style.

Follow this recipe (from the game) for best results: 


For the dough, you will need – 

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp sugar, 2 tsp salt
  • 3 sticks butter (cubed, chilled)
  • ½ cup ice water. 

For the strawberry filling –  

  • 2 lbs fresh strawberries (around 40)
  •  ⅔ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • A taste of honey. 


  1. Chop butter into small pieces and chill in the fridge for one hour while assembling other ingredients.
  2. Mix flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl or processor.
  3. Mix chilled butter pieces into other ingredients in the bowl/processor until pea-sized.
  4. Mix in ice water a few tablespoons at a time until a sandy, cohesive dough forms. If using a processor, pour in slowly while running until the dough forms a ball, pulling away from the side walls. You may not need the full measure of water. 
  5. Split the dough in half, then flatten it into two disks (one for the bottom, one for the top). Wrap each tightly with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for at least one hour before use. 
  6. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  7. Hull and half strawberries (save some for garnish). Mix sugar, cornstarch, salt, lemon juice, and vanilla in a bowl for 5-10 minutes.
  8. Roll pie dough out into 12-inch circles. Use one potrion to line the bottom of a 9-inch pie pan and slice the other into 1-inch strips for the lattice top. Chill both in the fridge for 5 minutes.  
  9. Pour the strawberry filling into the bottom pie crust and arrange the lattice dough strips over top. Press strips firmly into the bottom crust along the outside of the pie. Chill for 10 minutes. 
  10. Trim any dough overhand. Beat egg and brush eggwash on top of the pie. Sprinkle with sugar and bake on the lowest oven rack for 20 minutes.
  11. Reduce the temperature to 350°F and continue to bake for one hour or until the filling is bubbly and the crust is golden brown. 
  12. Remove the pie and drizzle with honey. Cool completely before slicing.

3. Minecraft Cake (Minecraft

One of the most popular games in the industry, Minecraft, redefined how players could play a video game. Thanks to its sandbox style of gameplay, the freedom to make anything is endless, and the only limit is the player’s imagination. Players could build whatever they wanted, fight all kinds of enemies, customize their characters, use tools, hunt and tame animals, and even farm food. Some of the meals that players could cook in the game are mushroom stew, cooked beef, or baked potatoes. But perhaps one of the most iconic foods to make is the Minecraft cake. What sets this food apart from the rest is that, unlike other foods, it also functions as a block where players can place it down and admire a 3D model of the cake. And just like a real cake, players can eat multiple slices until the pastry is eventually gone. 

This cherry-looking cake is nostalgic for sure, and in the game, the player needs to gather 2 sugars, 1 egg, 3 buckets of milk, and 3 pieces of wheat. Unfortunately, in the real world, it’s not as simple as slapping all the ingredients together on a crafting table. However, some ingredients can be used to simulate this pastry (recipe by allrecipes.com). 


For the cake- 

  • 2 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt, 1 cup milk
  • 1 ½ tbsp milk
  • 1 ⅓ cups white sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract. 

For the decoration-

  • ¼ cup cherry jam
  • 3 cups chocolate buttercream frosting
  • 14 oz marzipan
  • 5 drops of red food coloring (or as needed)
  • 1 tbsp confectioners’ sugar. 


  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch square cake pans. 
  2. Make the cake – sift two ⅓ cups, one ½ tablespoons flour, ½ cup, and 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl. Combine 1 cup plus ½ tablespoon milk and in a liquid measuring cup. 
  3. Beat white sugar and butter together in a bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy for about 4 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Add flour mixture alternatively with milk, mixing batter gently between after addition. Divide batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. 
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean for 30-40 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely for about 30 minutes.
  5. Assemble and decorate the cake: Trim the tops of the cake layers to make sure they are flat. Place one layer onto a serving platter. Spread jam on top, then cover with the second layer. Spread chocolate buttercream frosting over the top and sides of the cakes, reserving about 2 tablespoons of frosting. 
  6. Pinch off a piece of marzipan about the size of a golf ball. Add red food coloring and knead until the color is evenly distributed. 
  7. Dust a flat work surface with confectioners’ sugar and roll out the remaining undyed marzipan. Cut out a 9-inch square; carefully transfer it to the top of the cake. 
  8. Roll trimmings of marzipan and cut into flour 9×1 ½ inch strips. Cut three rectangular notches into one edge of each strip. Press strips onto the sides of the cake, with the notches facing down, then gently press the top and strips of marzipan together to adhere.
  9. Roll out red marzipan and cut into squares of varying sizes. Spread a little of the reserved frosting on the back of each square to act as glue; arrange in a random Minecraft pattern on top of the cake.

2. Vegetable Soup (Castle in the Sky

Fictional foods like the vegetable soup seen in "Castle in the Sky" may be a great new addition to holiday traditions.

Castle in the Sky is an anime film animated by Studio Ghibli. The film follows a young orphan girl named Sheeta and her kidnapper, Col. Muska, who are flying to a military prison when a group of air pirates attacks their plane. Escaping her captors, Sheeta meets a fellow orphan boy named Pazu and a woman named Dola, who helps her find the mysterious city of Laputa while being pursued by Muska and the pirates. In one of the scenes, Dola makes Sheeta cook for the crew, and one of the dishes she is seen cooking is a scrumptious vegetable soup. This soup is called winter vegetable nimono, which is a Japanese dish simmered in dashi-flavored stock with sugar, sake, mirin, and soy sauce. 

Here is the recipe (by Nyadia on aminoapps.com): 


For the broth-

  • 1 ¾ cups dashi stock
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 2/4 cups water

For the vegetables- 

  • 1 large carrot (peeled)
  • 1 large potato (peeled)
  • 1 large onion
  • 3 medium-sized fresh shitake mushrooms
  • 3 tbsp snow peas. 

For added flavoring- 

  • 1 tsp sesame oil (or olive/vegetable oil)
  •  ½ tbsp white or raw sugar
  • 1 tbsp sake
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce. 


  1. Start by cutting the carrots. The most common cut used is ran-giri, which means ‘random cut’ or ‘rough cut’
  2. Cut up the potatoes. This next part is optional but will help with the outcome of the dish. Potatoes are starchy, and the sharp edges sometimes dissolve into the stew. This makes them look kind of messy. To avoid this, use the cutting method, mentori, which means ‘taking off the edges.’ Now let the potatoes sit in a bowl of water, then drain to rinse off the surface starch. Don’t let them sit too long, or they will be soggy and mushy potatoes. Again, this is optional but will help the final outcome.
  3. Cut off the stems of the shitake mushrooms (if you use another type of mushroom, leave the stem on), then cut all the heads diagonally in half.
  4. Cut the onion into wedges (or however preferred)
  5. Heat up the pan and dump in a teaspoon of sesame oil. Now add in the onions. Stir around for about 2 – 3 minutes until the edges begin to become a bit clear.
  6. Add in the carrots and potatoes, then continue stirring for 1 – 2 minutes.
  7. Add in the mushrooms and peas, then continue to stir for another 1 – 2 minutes.
  8. Add the broth to the pan. The broth should come above the vegetables; if not, add more water or dashi stock until it does.
  9. Bring the water to a boil. Leave it boiling for a minute or two before bringing it back to a simmer.
  10. Add in the flavoring you premixed during prep.
  11. Finally, let the dish simmer on its own until it’s done. An otoshibuta, or ‘dropped lid,’ would now be placed directly on the surface of the food being cooked. It prevents the surface from drying out and prevents the ingredients from moving around and falling apart. Alternatively, use a metal pot lid that’s smaller than the pot you’re using.
  12. After about 20 minutes of simmering, the winter vegetable nimoto should be done.

1. Onigiri (Spirited Away

Fictional foods like the onigiri seen in "Spirited Away" may be a great new addition to any holiday meal.

Spirited Away is another Studio Ghibli anime film that includes many scenes with savory foods. In the film, a 10-year-old girl named Chihiro and her parents come across an abandoned amusement park. Her parents indulge themselves in mountains of food, only to turn into pigs later on. After this shocking surprise, Chihiro meets a boy named Haku, who tells her that the amusement park is meant for supernatural entities who take some time off from their earthly affairs. In order to free herself and her parents, Chihiro must work for Yubaba, the leader of the realm. 

Throughout the film, there are several scenes where delicious food makes an appearance on screen. One of these foods is the onigiri that Chihiro receives, also known as a Japanese rice ball. These are often formed into triangular or cylindrical shapes and wrapped in nori. This is the easiest dish to create on this list by far, as it only requires 3 main ingredients.   1. With wet hands and a pinch or two of salt, then form the rice into a triangular shape. 
  2. Then, place a slice of nori at the bottom of the onigiri, and that’s it! A new side to add to the table of appetizers.
