Ridley Scott Teases Paul Mescal’s “Very Difficult” Role in ‘Gladiator’ Sequel

“Are You Not Entertained?”

Lately, it seems like Ridley Scott is gunning for a fight, first by calling out French critics of Napoleon and now by bringing us back into his sanguinary Roman arena via a sequel to Gladiator (2000.)

Star-Studded Line-Up

During a Rotten Tomatoes interview released on X, formerly known as Twitter, Ridley gave us a glimpse of what to expect. According to Scott, Paul Mescal (Aftersun) will be taking on a “very difficult” role as Lucius, the son of Maximus’ (Russell Crowe) former lover Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) from the 2000 film. In the original, Lucius was a mere 12 years old; however, after vanishing into the wilderness for 15 years, he has reemerged as an adult – a shock to his own mother, who presumed he was dead.

In addition to Mescal, Pedro Pascal has joined the cast, though Scott has not released details yet. However, some information has emerged about Denzel Washington’s character: a slave who has obtained his freedom.

Other actors signed on include Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi from the original film, as well as newcomers to the Gladiator world: Djimon Hounsou, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah, and Matt Lucas.

Hero vs. A Pack of Baboons

According to an interview with the New Yorker, Scott says he’s already busy editing scenes from the sequel, including one where the hero fights a pack of baboons. He further elaborated on how the idea germinated – when he saw video footage of baboons getting feisty with tourists in South Africa.

Men Thinking about the Roman Empire

Due to the viral TikTok trend demonstrating how men obsessively think about the Roman Empire, society at large has been pondering over whether any males have been left unscathed. Unfortunately, it’s clear that men’s time spent analyzing their ancient brethren will only increase on account of the buzz surrounding Gladiator 2

Paramount Pictures set a theatrical release date for November 22, 2024. While you wait, check out Gladiator, now streaming on Netflix.
